    Default Glowing night sky

Seeing as the last time I played stock Rome was several years ago, I don't know if this is an RTR issue or a rome one. When fighting a night battle, one half of the sky looks nice and dark with stars, but the other half is filled with a bright, eerie, washed-out glow. Is this known, and if so is there an easy fix?

    thanks

    ???????

I'm not sure that cardboard and ductape will fit in my laptop.

So has this issue never been heard of, meaning I should re-install, or is it a known problem?

I recently retrofitted my Roma Surrectum install with the RSII environment and have encountered the exact same problem. I am working through the daytypes, skydome, and lighting files as I speak to figure it out. I'll let you know later what I come up with (at least which file is the likely culprit, if not how to fix it).

I have yet to play a night battle on this mod, but I'll look into that as well.

Cover up the part of your screen that is bright.

I am not claiming it is the best fix, but it certainly is the easiest.

Update: the problem is definitely in the file "descr_skydome.txt" but I don't have the time to go through it line by line and figure out exactly where and fix it just at the moment... a quick fix, though, is to make a backup of the file somewhere else (so that it can be reinstated later) and then replace the one in the "data" folder with the one from your vanilla install (assuming you wisely kept a clean copy somewhere) -- I noticed that the sky in the vanilla version is a little hazier at the horizon lines, but at least half the sky isn't lit up at midnight.

Update: there seems to be some trouble with descr_daytypes.txt as well. I just found that temperate forests still have the problem.... this is interesting... don't change anything just yet. I might be a while figuring this one out.

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Nevermind all that. There was some clash between the sky colors for night in descr_skydome.txt and the sun color for night in descr_daytypes.txt. I ran through the text and I think I fixed it for RSII. I'm going to run a few tests, and will give those guys a heads up about that. Give me a day or two to make sure that fixes it and then I'll work through a fix for RTR.

They did mod those files for RS2 to get more atmospheric lighting, perhaps they didn't test to see how it looked at night...

Actually, what they had for the sound_test climate was about right. I tweaked it a bit and applied new night lighting to all night entries, with there only being a slight difference between hour 0 and hour 21 (to simulate that between them is the unholy darkness). Still haven't figured out how to darken the ground a little more (I don't want to do it with ambient proportions in descr_battlemap_lighting...... because it will mess up the daytime lighting. I think this might fall under "there's only so much you can do with the RTW engine"... But I did test it a bit, and the changes did fix the problem (plus I generally darkened the night sky altogether). Like I said though, it'll be a few days before I can pump out a fix for RTR (after I get ahold of the devs about it).

Well, I PM'd Tony to ask if they'd want to incorporate my changes into a hotfix, but I haven't heard back from him, so I'll give you the files you need directly. But first, I need to know the pathfile of your install of RTR, so I can tell you where to put them.

My RTRVII folder is located in the RTW root folder- C:\Rome - Total War. Wouldn't the files just go into the RTRVII folder?

In that case, these need to go into \\Rome - Total War\RTRVII\Data But first, you need to go into that folder and make backup copies of the versions of these files that are already there and put them elsewhere << you may or may not already know this, but you'd be surprised how many don't and I'm not one to take chances. Attached are the two .txt files you need to replace. Let me know if you still have any odd lighting issues after this - I only tested it in Italy, but I standardized the night entries so it should be dark pretty much everywhere for night battles (bonus: I also darkened the values for everything on the ground as well).

P.S.: If anyone on the RTR team would like to test these as against the original versions for campaign night battles and/or use them, I only adjusted the night values, because there didn't seem to be any issues with the daytime ones, and the campaign climates were the ones most affected. I originally intended to give them to you guys to use in a hotfix or whatever, anyway, but haven't heard back from Tony yet.

Of course if anyone experiences lighting issues after using these versions, direct those questions to me and not the RTR team; I modded the files, and I will sort out any problems (unless of course one of them volunteers to look at it). However, I take absolutely no responsibility whatsoever for anyone who does not make backup copies of the original files; if, for some reason, these do not work (they should, but still) and you have not made backups of the originals, that's your own foolishness and you can't pin that on me. I said it in the beginning of this post and I'm saying it again: ALWAYS backup your files before modifying ANYTHING.

I hope you find these helpful, and enjoy.

Don't know why you quoted all of that, but... I'm not sure about vanilla; I'd have to actually go through all of the files in RTW and check them for climates - which I really don't feel like doing right now. I know that it won't work properly with the RSII environment because they have some different climate entries. I did make a similar fix for the RSII environment, and Tone is also working on his own version (as far as I know), so that's really a non-issue.

...If you look carefully, you can even spot the concentric Vulture trio still going round and round in the middle of the night...
