    Default Scotland : No more scots guard ?

    It's been quite some time since I played Stainless Steel, and seeing that a 6.4 version was out, I jumped on it and tried my favorite faction : Scotland.

    My favorite because I love the mix heavy pike + Scots guard... The ONLY faction with that kind of gameplay, quite UBER but given its extreme northwest location and its very poor cavalry, I found it balanced.

    I was quite disappointed not to see them after the FULL PLATE ARMOR event, and after loooong hours of playing. I would have loved to know that BEFORE playing 6.4, I searched and searched again, but it seems that information is nowhere to be found.

    Now, the question is : What tweaks do I need to do to get them back for Scotland in 6.4 ?

    Open export_descr_buildings.txt in SS6.3\data and add scotland to the recruit pools and resources for Scots Guard. So:

    Code:
    recruit_pool "Scots Guard"  1   0.13   1  0  requires factions { france, scotland, } and event_counter FULL_PLATE_ARMOR 1 and hidden_resource france or hidden_resource scotland
    Oh and it's savegame compatible.

    Ok, I've found how :

    In export_descr_buildings.txt, change this line : recruit_pool "Scots Guard" 1 0.13 1 0 requires factions { france, } and event_counter FULL_PLATE_ARMOR 1 and hidden_resource france
    into this line : recruit_pool "Scots Guard" 1 0.13 1 0 requires factions { france, scotland, } and event_counter FULL_PLATE_ARMOR 1 and hidden_resource france or hidden_resource scotland

    And this line : recruit_pool "Scots Guard" 0 0.085 1 0 requires factions { france, } and event_counter FULL_PLATE_ARMOR 1 and not hidden_resource france
    into this line : recruit_pool "Scots Guard" 0 0.085 1 0 requires factions { france, scotland, } and event_counter FULL_PLATE_ARMOR 1 and not hidden_resource france

    And this line : marksmans_range castle requires factions { denmark, teutonic_order, jerusalem, norway, hre, france, england, turks, moors, mongols, timurids, southern_european, timurids, }
    into this line : marksmans_range castle requires factions { denmark, teutonic_order, jerusalem, norway, hre, france, england, scotland, turks, moors, mongols, timurids, southern_european, timurids, }

    Well, at least it works know, as the Scots weren't producing the Marksman's Range building.

    I wonder why they were removed. It probably has to do with having factions that ended up getting assimilated into others as distinct groups the whole game. What would Scotland have looked like in the late part of the era if England had not been around, or had not been at war with it? Would the Byzantines have adopted new weapon technologies if they had lived a little longer, or had better generals? It is hard to be historically accurate but also create a balanced game.

    Keep in mind that 6.4 was never intended as a final product. The designers might be willing to take suggestions for the next version.

    I imagine they were removed since they werent actually used by the Kingdom of Scotland. However, its possible that the Scots could have raised some given time or something like that o_o

    It's quite funny that France has the best longbowmen - Scots Guard in the late era, while Scots has the worst one at the same time...

    The French imported all the good Scottish longbowmen, leaving none for the Scots. Dang French

    Scots guards are a elite unit. A personal guard of french king. In nothing about tons of longbows at french cities. The scots not have them because they love more melee battles than full plate armors.
    Scots guards can be something like scolari.
    They have crossbows, alebasters and french archers.

    Yes, in fact scots guards were in no way longbowmen with plate armor. And have you ever heard of pikemen with knight armors ? We shouldn't forget the "game" part here. The historical accuracy is essentially for background, and we begin each game with a historical background. The purpose of the game ? In the many purposes it has, there's this one : We can change history !

    How would have evolved the scots if they had conquered England ? We do not know. The game here proposes future hypothetical units that "might" have been if scots had borrowed the longbowmen from the english, and if they had greatly improved their pikemen in the purpose of building an hypothetical army of conquest...

    All this to say, the first purpose of a game is fun, and I like the fun of seeing a mongolian army impaling itself on my armored pikemen of Jerusalem, while my Scots Guards compete with their archers...

    Historical accuracy ? None. But Fun !

    Historically the Scots used the longbow. There was no geographic border where bows suddenly became shorter as you moved north. Bows of all lengths were used all over the British Isles (and Scandinavia). The advantage that the English had was in the training the archers received and the standardisation of their equipment.

    Out of the 6000 that arrived in 1424, 4000 were archers.

    "At the beginning of 1424 Buchan arrived back, bringing with him a further 6500 men. He was accompanied by Archibald Douglas, 4th Earl of Douglas, arguably the most powerful nobleman in Scotland. On 24 April 1424 the army, comprising 2500 men at arms and 4000 archers, entered the Dauphin's headquarters at Bourges, helping to raise Charles' spirits."
    From wikipedia.

    Is there an argument for lowering there missile attack and making them Combination troops, a la Ottoman or Arbalasters?
