    Default The wrong graphics card?

So, awhile back I bought a new Dell PC. I chose the graphics card upgrade to the ATI Radeon 5450. I haven't been able to open the Catalyst Control Center because it tells me that "it cannot be started because the currently active GPU is not supported." Well, I wanted to find more information on my graphics card so I went to the device manager and it says I have "Intel (R) HD Graphics" and I have to use the "Intel Graphics and Media Control Panel" to control my card. Did Dell put the wrong graphics card in my computer or is it the card I ordered?

Post your dxdiag. It's possibly buried in there or you have a bad sle of goods.

I'm not sure how to do that. I looked up dxdiag and tried to find something, here's a pic:

EDIT: While I'm asking these questions, I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop with Vista an ATI Express 1150 graphics card. It won't play the original Medieval Total War and crashes when I try to start a campaign. The graphics card is rumored to be the problem. Do you think it would be cheaper to buy a cheap laptop I can play it on or a graphics card that is compatible with the game? Recommendations? Thanks

    1. It tells me nothing. Click the "Save all info" button on the bottom of the dxdiag an post the file as an attatchment. The info will be buried in there.

    2. The original MTW I have not touched since Nvidia decided not to make its drivrs backward compatible anymore since they released the 8000 series cards. I have also now lost the disc so I can't help you there.

One of two things have happened, either the card is not istalled or the drivers for it were never installed.

Try updating the drivers from www.dell.com.

I suppose I should download this one since this is the card I'm suppose to have: http://support.dell.com/support/down...&fileid=435041 What happens if you try to install drivers and you don't actually have that card. Thanks for your help +rep.

If you don't have the card, it's supposed to just kick you out and not install it.

The Optimus laptop dxdiags I have read to this point, the Nvidia cards seem to get his because of it being tied to Intel and and AMD ones have all shown up as installed drivers.

Yous dxdiag does not show neither installed drivers nor the card.

Sounds like you need to disable your onboard graphics.

Should be able to switch between them in the CCC.

I would try that but my CCC doesn't open because "the currently active GPU is not supported" according to the error message it gives me.

What settings do you have in BIOS? Knwing Dell, they will be limited but there maybe something to work with.

Uninstall your card, and remove it, then uninstall everything you can find that says ATi and then uninstall your old on-board GPU drivers. Then follow the instructions that came with the card to the letter. Should work out fine.

ron looking at the dxdiag screenshot, there is almost 2gb of memory to the intel gpu, no laptop on this gen or the other gen can get that much of memory onto it.

And I think he was referring to the inspiron 1015 that he possess not the computer in question

well but in the end its all guesses, has he really posted the entire dxdiag?

Posting a new one would help. He did but looks like it got lost someplace.
