historical battles on the map?

I found an icon of two swords on my map and it says it is a historical battle site. Now is that a real historical battle or is it one that happened in the game?

so this DOES happen in m2! sweet. i use to have them all the time in rome but have yet to see a single one in m2.

They also don't mark naval battles. I would always see 2-3 near the Peloponnese, usually involving Greece and SPQR. They also don't appear if you fight the battle on a resource or watchtower, or in siege battles (relieving or dragging the city in as reinforcements are fair game).
