New to CoW
Hi! As the topic says I'm new to to Call of Warhammer. I'm not really experienced with the Warhammer fantasy lore or tabletop rules (although I have some experience) so I figuered asking around here for some info about the mod was a good place to start. Is this mod a good compromise between the the tabletop game and the total war engine?
If not, is there a way to make it more "true" to the tabletop rules? The stats and such? Thanks in advance

Re: New to CoW
Welcome. I can only really talk about the Lore - its pretty close as can be made I would think with the old total war engine. It seems balanced for me but I havn't played WfB since version 3 and when I used to work for GW.
As for tweaking it - yes the great thing about the MTW2 engine (over say the new Shogun engine) was it is relatively easy to be modded - but how you would mod it to make it more "like" tabletop I have no idea! After playing most of the factions I can say they are well balanced in my opinion - theres obviously a lot of work that has gone on. I'm sure everyone has their pet "I would like X to be a bit stronger" but for me it seems they work ok.

Re: New to CoW
there are submods that are honed for the tabletop, and no the game isnt 'really' 100% tabletop accuraate but the units do what you expect, ie empire cavalry and arty is powerful, but here troops are average, as you would expect.
if you like warhammer this mods is better to play than mark of chaos, and there isnt another warhammer game out there that can compare to this mod really. give it a go you will enjoy for sure.
recommend
-you start with a empire faction (averland or wissenland are good starts)
- you DONT start with elves, there economy is a ass for new players
- you DONT start with dwarves.
-the other factions are more of a increased difficulty but viable as 1st starts.

Re: New to CoW
I love it, I think it plays how WHFB should play. It is stupidly hard if you start as an elf, but it is playable and I have had great fun even while losing.

Re: New to CoW
indeed khass , im 55 turns in on elves, with good strong + economy and 2 fulls stack (both elite stacks thanks to the odds against us!) and having great fun, i essentially lost evrything near the start though cept the eastern camp and the very rich city to the west of middenland which i took early on at the expense of garrisons in capital.
a small tip: when you attack some chaos settlments, destroy evrything, build nothing and gift it immediatly to a empire faction (i usually give it to the one with least regions or the one with most money, but it dont matter really), what would happen, is if the empire didnt garrison it immedialty it would rebel, the chaos forces would take it over (resulting in a huge loss of their army usually) and build more thing (waste of money for them!) after 6 turns u move in after doing the same to 5 other settlements, retake rinse and repeat. i did this against khorne mostly who were the super power in my game, and defended against their stacks in settlements without fighting in the field, and i got most of my money to build money-making buildings elsewhere, also resulted in khorne getting nearly wiped out as all their key settlements was devoid of barracks.. which they had to waste 6 turns to rebuild..... now im in a position to take the initiative, just had the chaos invasion event screen, and am very prepared for it!

Re: New to CoW
well, concerning the elves and their economy if you want to try them out but too bothered by their economy you can try out my submod, i usually play elves and their disadvantage usually is they are not surrounded by too many regions and as a result get a really bad economic opportunity. i added numerous regions specifically aimed at Norsca and the elves, after turn 25-30 i have a solid naval economy going on in the sea of claws and already well prepared to help out Kislev and take the offensive to Khorne and Slaanesh(the two super powers).
i also have two EDUs, mine and the vanilla one so you have more of a choice

Re: New to CoW
Many of the dynamic tabletop rules, such as charging effects and morale, fit nicely into COW because Total War's engine has them in place. Other rules, like those over magic and spell effects, are well translated by COW, even though the processes are much different, the battlespace can be dominated by select hero units as in tabletop. The largest obsticle is of course that tabletop is turn based, and all of the rules are centered on this fact. Also, COW battles take place on clear ground, whereas the tabletop settings [at least the way I play] are filled with nice little ruins, streams, towers, bridges ect, that really make tactical maneuvers much more interesting in tabletop.
Stats are hard to translate, mainly due to units sizes IMO, which are much larger in COW than in tabletop. I agree that Toho's tweeks are a step in the right direction though, so that submod is well worth a look.
Enjoy and welcome!
Cheers!
