    Lol,

Actually you can get excommunicated in like 2 turns. Play with HRE or Milan or Venice or Sicily.
Take one army and attack Rome. Boom, you get excommunicated on the spot. At least in VH/VH (vanilla).

    Good luck.

I'm playing as England in my current campaign, and I could have got myself excommunicated on turn 4. I saved first then tested the situation to see if the threats were true. They were, so I reloaded and waited.

If you do not want to get excommunicated when the Pope warns you back off for a while then when its clear attack them again. Also make sure you are gifting the Pope Florins and map info.

no, it's wrong, if you play England you should not give a about the Pope's warnings; you know the "AI and naval invasions" story ...

If you want to go after your fellow Catholics and not deal with the papal headaches you need to use his interference to your advantage. Build up, attack and conquer several border regions and use the ordered cool-down period to secure them and build your armies for the next round of land-grabbing.

I dont pay much attention to Popey so dunno if its the same, but Med1 could only track one Popey warning at a time. So if a player really wanted to attack and clobber say France, he could attack HRE, get the popey warning to cease hostilities against HRE for 20 years or whatever, leave HRE alone and go get stuck into France for 20 years without popey grief. Job done..bye bye France!!

That works sometimes, but more often I am the one who is attacked. I defeat the attackers and counterattack by besieging an enemy settlement. The pope gets upset and threatens to excommunicate me. I fall back to my settlements, and the enemy starts attacking me without losing favor. Sometimes the pope is a pain and gives me that order while not giving it to the enemy. Maybe I just need your luck... can I borrow some?

When thats happened to me, the attacking faction's priorities have turned to Peace. In my current campaign, Poland betrayed my after a 103-year marriage alliance. They blockaded one port and sieged one city. I left the siege for three turns, but immediately attacked the blockading fleet twice to destroy it. I got the cease hostilities demand from the Pope, despite my city still being under siege, but Poland's priorities changed to Peace, so I got a ceasefire with them.

edit: forgot to mention about Portugal, they too seem to like your lands (Wales or Irland) and will invade even if you are not excommunicated

I don't really get that, they seem perfectly capable of attacking by sea The french often cross the channel so do the scots, and nations often travel by sea to the holy lands. They RARELY ever go by land unless they happen to be from a landlocked nation, anyone who possesses a port at the beginning seems perfectly capable.

Ah! That makes a good bit of sense! Now, I think I will try to find ways to manipulate the Pope to make him do what I want him to (at least most of the time.)

Getting excommunicated early on is the best time to do it, especially if a crusade has already been called. And even if you get excoummicated, the chances of that happening are slim. Even slimer is anybody joining (if it's called against you). Playing as the Holy Roman Empire, I found you could steam-roll your way over your neighbors quite easily, just but not trying to please the man in Rome.

That's the key to an early victory.

No, the key to an early victory is not getting excommunicated and going on crusade. Check out my blitz aar below for details, going on crusade early makes it possible to complete the game easily in under 20 turns.

Yeah the scots are priority number 1. take rufus's stating army ad a few mercenaries(not to much) blockade their port wit admiral geiles and have rufus go into the control zone of prince edward of scotland, he usually atcks and you will usually have a terrain advantage

Im playing as Venice in another campaign i have every city in italy and sicily besides Rome i attacked milan straight away and destroyed the faction. The funds i was making off those cities i used to almost destroy the byzantine empire who are have almost all the regions in Turkey. But i have Nicea and Constantinople under siege so i was looking pretty happy untill out of nowhere the pope, who is the pope of venice who has seen me be at war with the Byzantines forever says he is BFF's with them and threatens to lower my standing with the pope... well i have full standing so i keep sieging a turn later i get excommunicated 3 turns later hungary, portugal, spain, france and HRE declare war on me and i get a crusade put on Venice...

That reaaaaaly peed me off but im going well 4 sieges through with armoured seargeants and pavise crossbow militia iloveyou medieval total war ai who runs straight into spearman<3
