You'll get excommunicated earlier or sooner ^_^
I'm playing as England in my current campaign, and I could have got myself excommunicated on turn 4. I saved first then tested the situation to see if the threats were true. They were, so I reloaded and waited.
If you do not want to get excommunicated when the Pope warns you back off for a while then when its clear attack them again. Also make sure you are gifting the Pope Florins and map info.
If you want to go after your fellow Catholics and not deal with the papal headaches you need to use his interference to your advantage. Build up, attack and conquer several border regions and use the ordered cool-down period to secure them and build your armies for the next round of land-grabbing.
Actually, I never care much about the pope and attack whoever I want.
I dont pay much attention to Popey so dunno if its the same, but Med1 could only track one Popey warning at a time. So if a player really wanted to attack and clobber say France, he could attack HRE, get the popey warning to cease hostilities against HRE for 20 years or whatever, leave HRE alone and go get stuck into France for 20 years without popey grief.Job done..bye bye France!!

That works sometimes, but more often I am the one who is attacked. I defeat the attackers and counterattack by besieging an enemy settlement. The pope gets upset and threatens to excommunicate me. I fall back to my settlements, and the enemy starts attacking me without losing favor. Sometimes the pope is a pain and gives me that order while not giving it to the enemy. Maybe I just need your luck... can I borrow some?![]()
When thats happened to me, the attacking faction's priorities have turned to Peace. In my current campaign, Poland betrayed my after a 103-year marriage alliance. They blockaded one port and sieged one city. I left the siege for three turns, but immediately attacked the blockading fleet twice to destroy it. I got the cease hostilities demand from the Pope, despite my city still being under siege, but Poland's priorities changed to Peace, so I got a ceasefire with them.

the AI is dumb and incapable of invading via sea/ocean so don't worry if you are excommunicated as England because nobody will attack you (the British Isles), except maybe the danes (they really like Nottingham) , but I think they always do that when you play as England even if you are not excommunicated
edit: forgot to mention about Portugal, they too seem to like your lands (Wales or Irland) and will invade even if you are not excommunicated
Înfrânt nu eşti atunci când sângeri,
nici ochii când în lacrimi ţi-s.
Adevăratele înfrângeri,
sunt renunţările la vis.
I don't really get that, they seem perfectly capable of attacking by sea The french often cross the channel so do the scots, and nations often travel by sea to the holy lands. They RARELY ever go by land unless they happen to be from a landlocked nation, anyone who possesses a port at the beginning seems perfectly capable.
Getting excommunicated early on is the best time to do it, especially if a crusade has already been called. And even if you get excoummicated, the chances of that happening are slim. Even slimer is anybody joining (if it's called against you). Playing as the Holy Roman Empire, I found you could steam-roll your way over your neighbors quite easily, just but not trying to please the man in Rome.
That's the key to an early victory.
