Default More Religious order units in Teutonic Order

I have been playing through the Teutonic Order for some time now and it is my favorite faction but i find myself wondering why aren't The ritterbruder, christ knights, and some other units who are clearly part of the order of the teutonic knights considered religious order units? Was this a balance issue? Or a historical one? Thanks!

Teutonic knights in game are more like the Livonian Order which became a component order of the Teutonic Knights but was more focused on the Baltic whereas Teutonic Knights and some of those specific units you mentioned only focused on Jerusalem until that was obviously a lost cause or at least impractical.

Im privy to the teutonic orders roots but that doesnt answer my question. Let me clarify, I am curious as to why several of the units are considered "feudal" or have free upkeep in castles while they seem to me to be "religious order" units (lowered upkeep and improved morale).

I think (though correct me if I'm wrong) its just a balance issue. With the Order Knights they have very low upkeep compared to other knights and if the majority of an entire faction's knights had the lower upkeep it would be pretty unfair.

and even so jerusalem falls fairly quickly...
anyway, if u want to change only prices(recruitment upkeep etc), go to export descr unit and do it, i dont recomend messing with SS interiors like wich units are religious etc... cant tell u if the game will work properly after...
just search tutorials for the file said above and do what u want...
btw, messing there isnt save compatible...

Both. Historically it'd be because the Teutonic Order was pretty much running an autonomous state themselves, whereas the other religious orders were under the banner of the actual Crusader States. Game balance-wise if you set all the order's troops to religious, they would barely pay any upkeep and would be totally unbalanced

Question about the Teutons, is there a way to change their faction to give them a royal family?
I know it wouldnt be historicly accurate, but I really like playing politics with my sons, daughters and cousins

Bear in mind those units aren't limited to just the Crusaders States though.
They just start out holding some of the cities that can produce them.

Besides the Teutonic Order is way cooler anyway ;-)

i made a nice mess with the crusader states.... made my own reconquista, but i also got nottingham, toulouse, and pisa from different conflicts between the pope and excomunicated nations

i also owned the fatimids on year 1290, and now focusing on making peace with the seljuks while i manage to control the mongol hordes. hard to be a templar.

Ok... Ive already backed off that idea hehe.

Thinking about migrating Jerusalem/Templars faction to somewhere in western Europe for my next game.

Wait for the Moors to take over Iberia and then migrate the KoJ to make your very own Reconquista
