Yeah in SS the longevity of characters has been increased. So FM's tend to die in their 70's or sometimes 80's rather than their 60's like in vanilla.

    98 that's pretty crazy. I don't think I've seen a character get past 90 yet.

I once had a king of Scicily who lived to 89, come to think of it most of my generals who werent assassinated or died in battle lived to be in their eighties. Never had one get into the 90's though, they seem to just automaticaly die at that point for me.

I had a faction heir who was 79 (way older than the leader) get married to a thirty year old princess and have two kids before kicking the bucket in his mid eighties. Cradle robbing old

As England I got excomunicated with a king that was 82 and thought it wouldn't matter since he should die soon anyway... He lived til 98... >.>

I'm on my first campaign ever, had a royal family member live until 93. My oldest king got to 88.

For the love of all that is holy I cannot figure out how my current king and heir are picked since they are the only members NOT of royal blood in my court. Neither of them had the highest chivalry/dread when they were selected

They get picked by highest authority. Or other stuff, but let's leave it at that.

"Out with a bang" knowwhatImean eh?

But yeah ConvertedLurker, 98 is beyond insane. That dude would barely be able to walk let alone run a country. It still seems like there's an automatic cutoff that stops them from reaching 100, I wonder if anyone ever got to 100 or more?

I believe that 100 would be the max after that that died. in vanilla the oldest king i did have was 92 and that was extremely rare at that time.

    I have wondered,
How does character aging work exactly? Is their "died of old age" age decided when they are born? Or at a certain point (when they hit 60 or so) do the odds start going down on them every turn?

In realism terms isn't this all a bit extreme? I mean the average life expectancy during the middle ages was very low, around 30 I read somewhere.

Admittedly, the nobility would have better living conditions and as such a longer life expectancy and I get that people want to use their FM's for longer. But still, should characters be allowed to live this long in the middle ages?

Besides, a character's usefulness drops sharply when the 'beyond battle' trait kicks in (when he suddenly moves slower than infantry on the map).

AFAIK it comes down to a 'dice roll' at the end of each turn after a certain age. I noticed it once when saving before end of turn and the character died. I loaded again for some reason and the next turn he was still alive and kicking.

It's random but once they hit a certain age, they have a much increased chance of kicking the bucket.

And yes Dahoota you are correct. Life expectancy was very low by our standards. The mean age at death was around 38 or so. The number of people living into their 60s was very very small.

Allowing very old characters was the best way to allow characters to last longer for role-play purposes, particularly since ss adopted one turn per year, which halved their game life expectancy. They come of age at fourteen and max age is 105, at least that is what I set in the bgr version.

Oh definitely. Unless you decrease the timescale, the only way of having any character in the game for any useful period of time you need to have longer lifespans

And there is when I come to the rescue XoD

But seriously, if a 4 tpy or a umm... *clears throat 12 tpy is on use, one could put more realistic age limits.

Yes indeed. In my twelve turn per year version I actually want the opposite: for generals to mature late and retire early, otherwise they exist too long. (too long to get offspring and enjoy playing the family tree).

While it is obviously unrealistic for characters (even nobles) to live into their 90s or probably even 80s, life expectancy is a mean, not a median. That means that it skews much younger because of extremely high infant mortality rates and also of rates of death during pregnancy/childbirth. Once you made it to your teens, a noble could often be expected to live into their 50s or 60s, if not longer. Assuming that the 4 child per character trait is showing only the children that lived, I think it's fairly realistic for characters to be able to live into their 70s. 80s and 90s, not so much.
