    Default Most Challanging Campaign

    Hi all,

I was wondering what is the most challanging RTW game you have ever played. I am after a really hard (near impossible) challange really. I will play any mod or version or if you have a save game in a really difficult position, i would love to give it a go. I have tried SPQR which was good but the battles became a bit repetitive, RTR is awesome but i couldnt find a challanging faction, BareBonesWars is really good but im experiencing a few crashes. I havent tried Terrae Expugnandae yet, is this difficult?

My best games (hardest) have been on BI actually, where i have struggled as the goths, sarmatians and romano british.

    Thanks

On TE, I think the Eastern factions are the hardest, as well as Gaul. On vanilla, I'd guess that factions such as Thrace, and Parthia.

In Te try playing as the seleucids, they start out big, but you have a huge empire t manage and everyone wants a piece of it.

    Numidia.
Their income is bad, their units are horrible, and hardly any land in the first place.
And Carthage can mess with them.

Thrace when in RTR. I had to fight of the macedonian and greek phalanxes on vh/h and i just send in wave after wave of my falxmen but only after a series of 6 open field battles (!) full armies, i managed to bring down the full macedonian force over there... I managed to take pella, but taking the phalanx down was extremely hard with Thrace's unarmored falxmen. But when i finaly got Greece under my control, things started to get better and battles werent that hard anymore, but i surely found the beginning very challenging.

scythia is a bit hard too....
sure u have great cav, but the infantry is almost non-existant.
and u run low on money rather easy. there's also wide tracts of land u can't see.
and ur surrounded on the east by factions whose soldiers are designed to fight cav (german spear warbands, phalanx in macedonia and greece) and on the west better cav in parthia, although they aren't much of a threat... u have to hit thrace hard and fast in the beginning, it's the only way to survive.....

but on the bright side, u have to love horse archers... so yeah, maybe there are harder, but scythia ain't easy

Koinon Hellenon (Greeks) and Pontos in EB. In both campaigns, I had to withstand a very strong enemy with minimal resources.

Numidia in RTR on H/H, that was the hardest campaign ever, it took three times as long to set my economy, and my military sucked until the end.

I found numidia on rtr dissapointingly easy. I captured a couple of rebel cities at the start which gave me enough income to support one, nearly full, stack. I used this to pick off carthages cities one by one (along the coast) until i got to carthage itself. When my stack met a full carthagian stack i destroyed them and only ever lost about 10% of my men. I had the whole of africa in a few years

I wish the romans were a lot stronger in rtr.

Anyway thanks for the advice guys. I think i'll try thrace and scythia before moving on to another mod.

O RLY? How did you defeat the combination of Carthaginian phalanx, heavy cavalry and Balearean (sp?) slingers? AFAIK, Numidia has no good infantry early on and all their other units suck at hand-to-hand fighting. I had a hard time defeating a full Carthaginian stack near my capital, simply because I couldn't pin the enemy phalanx.

I found the desert infantry reasonable troops actually. The upkeep costs for cavalry are quite high in RTR but the numidian cavalry isn't. I had 3 or 4 family members in my stack, accompanied by about 5 units of a mixture of my own and mercenary numidian cavalry. I used the cavalry to weaken them, but most importantly scatter their advancing army. Then i would take them out one by one (hitting them for or directions - except the front )

The remainder of the army that made it to my infantry would only fight for a while until my rather tired cavalry hit them from behind and routing them. This was how i generally delt with armies full of plalanxes. Btw i didnt really experience their cavalry. It was early on in the game so i only faced one unit of general bodyguards per stack which i dealt with first with all my cavalry together. Hopefully its clear how i went about it...
