Default gpu temperature. is this normal?

is 68 celsius while idle and 80 under load normal for a geforce 8400 gs?

i was playing civ 4 yesterday when all of a sudden and after about 3 hours i got a lot of artifacts on screen.when i closed the game the video card crashed. when i restarted the computer i noticed that it was running at a temperature of about 78 c. so i left it idle for an hour. the temp never went below 68. after 20 minutes of rome total war (one battle and 7-10 turns on the campaign map) the temp went up to 80.
today after 10 minutes of running it went up from 57 c (the temp at system start) to 66 c.

usually my card runs at 50-ish while idle and a max of 73-75 while under very heavy load (meaning mass effect 2 or new vegas). normally civ 4 and rome aren't exactly taxing my video card so the temp shouldn't be so high.

should i be worried? are these temperatures normal? thing is it's summer out here and my room is hot as hell (around the high 30's). is it because of that? is there something wrong with my video card? i have stock cooling btw.

It's a tad high, but they're safe up to around 95C.

If that doesn't work then underclock it.

It's perfectly fine, GPUs go upto 110ºC when not properly dusted out etc. You need not bother.

Only ever got mine up to around ~95ºC. Something to aspire to, perhaps?

thanks everyone. i was a bit worried there. I've had a graphics card die on me before. not an experience i want to repeat.

The only time I had a GPU die on me was with my poor ol' X1950XT. My fault; the shop suggested a certain PSU and I'd never heard of the make before, but went ahead anyway because it was nice and cheap. Get a cheap PSU, and end up buying twice - and replacing the GPU in my case. Got a nice solid Corsair 650w now.

My 4850 is going to 90 degrees tops, usually with games like Crysis.

Edit: 68 degrees at idle sounds way too high - get out that can of compressed air (if you know how to use it properly) and de-dust that PC! I've a mate who uses a hairdryer to blow the dust away, but I'm not entirely sure if that's a good idea...

some 8400gs are passive cooled also depends on how many monitors

example 1 monitor my 6970 idles at 40c 2 monitors it idles at 49c 3 it idles at 57c its more strain

that said the GPU IS FINE

gpus are safe up to 95c thats when they begin to thermal throttle to try and keep the gpu from dying, you have 15'c of leg room thats perfectly fine

my cards hit 91-92c all the time not a big deal,

depending on the 8400gs your temps are pefectly normal and here why

the older 8000 series nvidia gpus do NOT have power saving features that means at Idle and at Load there power consumption is nearly identicle, this means that the only change would be GPU LOAD more LOAD more HEAT, that simple, so again i might be hungover and rambling but your perfectly fine theres no issues
