    Default Battle of Cannae (for 7 players) to play online

    Unit scale:

    Unit scale is totally optional (if you cannot afford large or huge, then play or normal or small).

    ========================

    Map - some flatland; if you have Belle's Map Pack then Roman Grassland would be good.

    If you don't have Belle's Map Pack, you can use Italian Lowland or Grassy Flatland.

    ========================

    Carthaginian Army of Hannibal - 3 players:

    One player = Gauls:
    Units:

    1 x Barbarian Warlord or Barbarian Chosen Warlord (optional)
    2 x Chosen Swordsmen
    5 x Warband
    2 - 3 x Swordsmen*
    2 - 3 x Naked Fanatics*
    0 - 2 x Skirmisher Warband*
    5 x Barbarian Noble Cav. / Barbarian Cav. (optional - but proportion must be 3:2, 4:1 or 5:0 in favour of Noble Cav.)
    1 x Druids (or - optionally - instead of Druids any other "extra" infantry unit, except for Foresters and Peasants)

    *Optional and to be agreed (but of course the sum of Swordsmen + Fanatics + Skirmishers must be 6).

    Total number of units: 20

    Total cost without any upgrades: ca. 9310 - 10750 denari.

    One player = Carthage:
    Units:

    1 x General's Bodyguard or General's Armoured Bodyguard (optional)
    1 x Sacred Band Cavalry
    2 x Sacred Band
    2 - 3 x Poeni Infantry*
    3 - 5 x Libyan Spearmen*
    6 - 5 x Numidian Mercenaries (cavalry)*
    3 - 4 x Skirmishers*

    *The sum of Poeni Infantry + Libyan Spearmen + Numidian cavalry + Skirmishers must be 16.

    Total number of units: 20

    Total cost without any upgrades: ca. 9390 - 10120 denari.

    One player = Spain:
    Units:

    1 x General's Bodyguard or General's Armoured Bodyguard (optional)
    8 x Scutarii
    3 x Long Shield Cavalry
    2 x Balearic Slingers
    1 - 3 x Skirmishers*
    1 - 4 x Naked Fanatics*
    1 - 4 x Iberian Infantry*

    *The sum of Skirmishers + Fanatics + Iberian Infantry must be 6.

    Total number of units: 20

    Total cost without any upgrades: ca. 8150 - 8900 denari.

    ================================

    Roman Army of Varro and Paullus - 4 players:

    All players = Romans (no matter which family, but House of Scipii or Julii would be good):
    Units (each player should have this set of units):

    1 x Roman General (normal one - not Armoured one, Roman players have no choice here)
    0 - 1 x Roman Cavalry (optional)*
    2 - 1 x Cavalry Auxilia or Equites (it can also be 1 x Equites + 1 x Cav. Auxilia)*
    2 - 3 x Triarii**
    4 - 5 x Hastati**
    4 - 5 x Principes**
    3 - 5 x Velites**
    0 - 1 x Roman Archers**

    *The sum of Roman Cavalry + Cavalry Auxilia or / and Equites must be 2 (!).

    **The sum of Triarii + Hastati + Principes + Velites + Roman Archers must be 17.

    Total number of units: 20 (x 4)

    Total cost without any upgrades: ca. 8330 - 9010 each.

    Number of denari has to be agreed. Each Roman player should have at least 8330 - 9010 denari (this amount is necessary for each of Roman armies without any upgrades). So in total at least 33320 - 36040 denari per team should be available for this battle. But it can also be more, if players want.

    I am not sure if "Carthaginian Team" should be allowed to use all denari. If you want the battle to be a bit harder for the Hannibal's army (as it was in reality), don't allow the Carthaginian team to use as many denari as Roman team but proportionally smaller amount.

    ================================

    Exchanging units between players:

    Players can agree to exchange units between themselves (provided that their factions have same types of units to exchange available).

    For example one Roman player can give 2 triarii to another Roman player, and take 2 principes in exchange. Etc.

    Also Carthage would be able to exchange some units with Spain, as these factions have many similar units.

    But the sum of units of each type for each team must be in agreement with the list of units for each team provided above.

    ================================

    Enjoy this historical scenario (I tried to make army compositions as historically accurate as possible and at the same time I tried to make it balanced).

    PS:

    Carthaginian army doesn't have elephants because sources say that all of Hannibal's elephants had already died before Cannae.

    Only few sources say that a few elephants (numbers range from 1 to 13) survived. But they didn't play any major role in this battle anyway.

    If you want to play in a historically accurate way - Gauls should be in the center of Hannibal's army, while Carthage and Spain should be on flanks.

    Of course Gallic cavalry later operated on flanks, but Gallic infantry should stay in the center.

    And heavy infantry of Carthage should be deployed also in the center, behind Gallic infantry.

    ==========================

    If someone is willing to play this - let me know. I will also participate.

    We can organize a game. Just write here which faction you want to play and when we can play this.

    It'd be a good thing to try with a historical battle scenario. Assuming anyone plays those for fun anymore. Or if anyone is willing to make one.

    I have found several willing players via "in game" search - this is the result (Hannibal lost, but he escaped to return and take revenge later! ).

    Romans "had stolen" victory - it was a close defeat / close victory.

    3 Roman commanders, Gallic and Spanish (my) commanders died in the battle.

    The rules were 10 k for each Roman player (total 40 k), 12 k for each "Carthaginian" player (total 36 k).

    The map was Italian Lowland (Grassy Flatland would be better probably).

    The way of allocating upgrades was up to each player.

    It could have been won. There was even a moment when it seemed that we had the advantage.

    But in the end Romans somehow won.

    Good game everyone - allies and enemies.

    I made some changes in unit lists so now all players have a bit more options to choose.

    I made historical battle of Cannae using RTW battle editor.

    This battle is for both singleplayer and multiplayer (but intended for multiplayer).

    You just have to download it, unpack into your RTW/Data/world/maps/battle/custom directory and play!

    The battle is for 6 players (but players from Hannibal's team have reduced number of units).

    Ah yeah Belle. I remember when ahille and aragon kept insulting her till she quit RTW. After all she did for the community.
    like that grinds away your faith in the human race.
