Default The Fix to all my problems with Shogun 2!

    bcdedit /set increaseuserva 3000

If you use a 32 bit OS, your virtual addressing is limited to 2GB. Unfortunately Shogun 2 doesn't seem to be large address aware, and when it reaches the 2GB limit, can crash and cause other problems. If you have 4GB of RAM on a 32bit version of windows and have some / all of the problems I list below I recommend you try this fix...

    Before this fix I had:

Repeated downgrading of graphics settings - anti-alias, texture details, shadows would all be downgraded even if I edited the preferences script to increase detected VRAM.
Unable to play in DX11 mode, game would crash within a turn on campaign map.
Unable to alt-tab game in DX11 mode, even on main menu.
Game would crash in campaign in DX9 mode after 30 minutes play.
Units would turn white after a few battles. All units textures in campaign and battles were white.
Crashes in legendary mode that corrupted my save-games leaving 0 byte files behind!

These are all gone now, I play in DX11 mode, I have extra graphics options enabled that I couldn't manage before (they would be auto downgraded). No crashes during extended play sessions.

To apply the fix READ THIS CAREFULLY:

    http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=238484

Depending on which OS you use, and how much installed memory you have, pick the option that best addresses the addressing problem.

2.5 GB - 3GB , no higher, you must leave space for your OS!!

    Hi man.

I have been experiencing crashes and freezes with Shogun 2, though I have a 64 bits operating system. Would you recommend that fix?

Nope, you have 64 bit windows, your OS does not have this issue. It should not be a lack of virtual memory addressing problem on your system, 64 bits do not have the 2GB limit that 32 bit OS's do.

Well, I will keep my crashes then...

Thank you and enjoy playing, others we are not so lucky...

I took me 4 months to find a fix... It's been a nightmare! I was not aware the issue had arisen in Empire (as I didn't have that game) but conversations with people on the official tech support boards pointed to a virtual memory problem.

What's strange is the effect it's had on my graphics. I can now run DX11, AA, Depth of Field, Tessilation, soft shadows etc without downgrading or crashing. I could not do this in DX9!???

Hoping my OS is stable though... seems so..

Freezes, and crashes could still be a memory issue, VRAM, drivers, I don't know your problem well enough...

Oh yeah, it is. I am just still trying to make sure it is not a hardware issue. I am trying everything!!! I just bought a 1650€ rig to play total war games maxed out... and I get crashes and some BSOD. Took it to the store several times and all that. I have a post about it.

Anyway, glad you found a solution. Wish me luck to find one for myself too. Enjoy gaming.

check your GPU is correctly recognised by the game, if its really new...
er check Napoleaon and empire tech support forums for people with 64 bit rigs experiencing same symptoms

crashing and freezing? bit vague - any other symptoms, freezes as in lock-ups or more like mini pauses? I still get mini pauses when I set ultra settings and massive unit sizes... thats a sign of VRAM running out and the game switching to system RAM (I think)... drops to 1 frame a second...

I experience mini pauses too, but most commonly now, after some changes in my software, and after many many hardware tests, because I used to have BSOD. Now I see a kind of pattern for my errors. Most frequently now I experience pc reboots when the game is really stressed, like when you fire a lot of firing arrows to one unit and you zoom in to the ground in the unit that is recieving the arrows.

    It is scaring me.

I read your thread. I had two sets of Xfire cards in the past. The originals with the dongle cable out the back to connect them and some 2900xtxs... Nothing but trouble. I won't go into detail, but I'll only buy nvidia these days, purely for reliability and game compatibilty.

I hope you get your problem fixed, but if disabling Xfire works, then that is most likely the problem. Ram timings may help, this game swaps alot of VRAM, system RAM, from what I've seen. Maybe crossfire AND RAM timings are related in the issue somehow. I don't know really. Suffice to say I hate Xfire and I too have spent lots of cash on twin cards from ati only for them to rarely work together as advertised. Often game dependent, spent a lot of time waiting for new drivers to fix issues and they never were fixed.

Sorry, not helpful but I have been there. When you do get them working together though it is nice... Till one fails...

    Thanks for your reply.

What do you mean by RAM timing? Sorry, but I'm not a native english speaker. Is that something I could do myself? Is it safe? It is weird cause the problem appears with the combination of xfire and DX11. DX9 xfire on, no problem, DX11 xfire off, no problem.

And yes, I also think I will never ever buy crossfire and AMD. Nvidia for the win... too bad I just spent 650€ in those little bastards 2 weeks ago...

ram timings should have zero correlation with shogun2 (well if you fiddle in bios either your pc wont boot or will crash but that will be for everything i.e games/apps). your ram should be on stock speeds and timings.

only when you overclock cpu do you need to worry about changes to ram but thats more complicated.

p.s i wondered if 32 bit os and amount of ram might be an issue with shogun2. basically for 4gb ram you need a 64 bit os.

Did you delete BOT Shogun2 folders and do a clean game reinstall? It will work on 23bit or 64bit.
