HD 5770, GTX 460. You could take a very good and lasting HD 6870, but with 200 pounds, and you'd possibly need a new PSU then, too.

whats the best card i can get with a 450W power supply? GTX 460 again?
and will my computer (4 gig RAM, 2.5GHz quad-core) run M2TW at 1920x1080 with the GTX 460 flawlessly? i mean i noticed when I got my 9800GT i was finally able to handle full (huge scale) stack on stack siege battles easily, even 2 stacks vs 1 stack siege battles around 10FPS and that card is like... 3 years old?
Medieval is a single threaded game meaning it can only use one core, so your nice quad core can only use one 1/4 of its possible performance.
Huge battles are CPU intensive because of all the calculations on the field etc.
Post your CPU info, if its a good overclocker with a little configuration and pretty cheap aftermarket cooler you could get some more performance out of your CPU..
And the 460 would be worth the money..
Maybe and Yes.
If you're looking for a cheaper option, go with the GTS 450.

well that's the thing, I DID get the GTS 450 and after looking at reviews for it I feel ripped off. turns out its only slightly better than the 9800GT, whereas the GTX 460 is meant to be pretty much miles ahead of the GTS 450.
also, i've gotten another £100, so theoretically if I was to spend £200 on a gfx card what would be the kind of thing i would be looking for?

i've looked up my CPU in the past (intel quad-core Q8300) and apparently it kinda sucks when it comes to overclocking. i remember trying to do so in the past in the BIOS by upping the CPU frequency from 333 to something like 400 but it would reset itself once i got to my desktop (I had software to check details about my computer and it stuck at 2.5ghz when it should have been 3.2 or something).
i would have thought a game like M2TW (or any 3D game for that matter) would rely more heavily on your gfx card's memory in regards to how fast it is though? i mean i know processing power is important, but i'd always thought computers nowadays are mostly bottlenecked in their performance by the user's graphics card rather than a weak processor?
For the most games (new anyway) you're right, with games like TW being the exception.
A huge battle is thousands and thousands of single unit calculations which are handled by the CPU.
I'm not say that your overall performance will not increase with a new GPU though.
