    Default Thracia (Resolved)

"What a ghastly country..." Corva thought to himself.

By order of the Senate Corva had ridden to Thracia accompanied by a Vexillatio of cavalry to establish trade relations and see if the Republic could make any inroads into the political situation there. According to history, Thrace had always been a fractured land, its ferocious warriors battling each other and hiring themselves out to countless nations. After speaking to local tribes, they nearly all confirmed that the Odyrisans had a hegemony over thrace. From here, King Cotys I ruled over the peoples of Thrace from his capital of Seuthopolis.

Corva rode into the city on a white stallion, dressed in general's armor and regalia followed by his cavalry. The city looked Greek, it seems the Thracians tried to copy their southern neighbors, although it was a poor replication. He dismounted before the gates of the King's palace and spoke to the guards.

"Tell your King a Proconsul of Rome wishes to speak to him with the authorty of the SPQR."

ooc: someone want to RP Cotys? preferably someone informed on thrace...

Thank you I am aware of Byzantium but it was a minor town at this time in history I believe. All will be annexed by Rome in good time, eh?

The senator is lead into a throne rome in the late hellenistic style and a rather fierce looking man says

    Speak

"King Cotys of Thrace, you should know it is a great honor to be identified as a friend of Rome, and the Senate wishes to open trade relations. Thrace has many resources, and Rome can open up a new world of wealth to your dominion, if you would accept. Rome sees Thrace as a critical strategic and econmic partner, your existence provides us with a buffer state against the Dacians, while our forces can ensure your persoanl dyasty will remain eternally in command of Thrace."

    Corva pauses;

    "One more thing....

...because of my imperium in the East, I am personally most curious of your stance on Mithridates of Pontus. I hear many proclaim him as "Defender of the Greeks" and "Great Liberator"; roman spies inform me that his supporters are rousing support throughout Greece and even the cities along the coast of thrace. Some even say the Thracian people are rallying to his banner. This displease Rome to think that our friends would betray us. Would you object to a stationing of a cohort in Byzantium (and temporary control) to monitor these threats until Mithridates is neutralized? Your support would greatly increase relations between our two nations."

The king listens to the man impassively, and then says to the man

Tis a good thing to know I am a friend of Rome

But your fears of Thracian support for Mithridates are unfounded. Personally I find him too far away and really his whole "defender of the Hellenes" image is a sham. Also, isnt their your roman possessions in Asia Minor such as Pergamon that would be more appealing to him. What I think you want is another avenue of attack to finish what you couldn't in the last two Mithridatic wars,

    Correct?

Now, I will not have the stationing of troops in Thrace, but should their be a future conflict with Pontus I will be willing to offer passage through my territory, auxiliaries, and supplies. What does Rome have to offer me if I may be direct

"You say that you do not serve Mithradites now, but in the past Thrace has aligned itself with the armies of Pontus, so Rome has legitmate reasons for concern.

But I will ignore your unintentional insult as a friend, and merely conclude my visit by solidifying our relationship as a Patron."

    TRACTATUS THRAX
    1. Thrace will become a Client
    2. Thrace will provide auxillaries, passage, and supplies to the Proconsulate of Greace et Asia during war
    3. Rome will confirm the line of Coty's as rightful rulers of Thrace against all others
    3. Rome will ensure the territorial sovereignty of Thrace against foreign threats with its legions

    "However, that is not all....

    *Corva claps*

Roman soldiers heft in 5 oak chests of coin.

"Gold speaks louder than words. A gift from my own treasury to you, Cotys. 5000 denarii, the equivalent of over 3 years worth of taxes in Thrace, am I not correct? And there is much more gold where that came from. I wish not only Thrace and Rome to be allies, but you and I personally... I will require 300 Thracian cavalry and 300 Thracian Peltasts, the rest of the Denarii is yours to spend on your own pleasures. If the time comes and enemies within our own republic threaten its existence I want to count on your support."
