Default OT: Tales of Dunk and Egg

So I've noticed discussions about all the books, but let's remember that Martin has a very rich history to his world.

Have you noticed that GRRM has included more and more references to Dunk and Egg in the more recent books?

I like how they have been added in throughout. I've also heard that he will be releasing four stories about these guys.

Does anyone else enjoy these characters a whole helluva lot?

    And....discuss.

Yeah, you're right. There's even a hint of them in aDwD. I guess he's just showing how important they were.

I really like the prequel novels mainly because they have a very adventurous feel to them. Like a buddy/road trip film. Serious but still has a lighthearted feel to them. Okay, maybe Dunk is your typical do-gooder hero, so what.. I still like the idea of a hero trying to do what's right in a world full of snobs. Plus we already know what happens to them(it was told in the main series.. mainly small details)and naturally I'm curious to know what really went down so I'm looking forward for more of this series. Hopefully once it's done GRRM will release it as its own book, hopefully before he eats himself to death... he's in his 60s and not exactly the picture of ideal human health, i'm just saying what everyone else is thinking..

And who are you, the proud lord said, that I must bow so low? Only a cat of a different coat, that's all the truth I know. In a coat of gold or a coat of red, a lion still has claws, And mine are long and sharp, my lord, as long and sharp as yours.

I really want to read those two book, Hedge knight 1 and 2... but the first book is priced for over 86$ up to 122 Euro... Way too expensive!!
Anyone got a idea where to get it on the cheap, or know if they plan to relaunch them?

The second got a more normal pricetag..

While they were a good read they were short stories and i no longer enjoy many books unless they are a large series of smaller books or they are 600+ pages. I feel like i dont get in depth as much in a shorter story.

The individual volumes - THE HEDGE KNIGHT and THE SWORN SWORD - are graphic novels, basically comic-book adaptations of the short stories. They're very good, but they're not the original prose short stories.

The original version of THE HEDGE KNIGHT is impossible to find now, but fortunately was recently reprinted in the collection of George R.R. Martin's other short fiction, DREAMSONGS. It's in the big-one volume hardcover and trade paperback edition, or in Volume II of the two-volume mass-market paperback version.

The original version of THE SWORN SWORD is located in LEGENDS II, an anthology edited by Robert Silverberg. The UK edition of the book is one volume so it's easy to find, but the US version is split into three or four different smaller books for some obscure reason, so make sure you get the right one (the stories included are listed on the cover and back blurb).

The third story, THE MYSTERY KNIGHT, can be found in WARRIORS, the anthology released in 2010 edited by GRRM and Gardner Dozois. Again, it's in the one-volume hardcover and trade paperback. Annoyingly, the mass-market paperback was split into three smaller books. I believe THE MYSTERY KNIGHT is in the first volume.

The fourth story, which has the working title THE SHE-WOLVES, will be published in DANGEROUS WOMEN, a new anthology by GRRM and Dozois to be published in 2012.

However, if you're more patient, then you may want to hold out for 2013, when TALES OF DUNK 'N' EGG VOLUME I will be published featuring all four stories in one easy-to-find volume.

Indeed. They take place about 90 years before A GAME OF THRONES, so there isn't a direct interaction with the novels, but their adventures do set up some of the things that become relevant in the books.

For example (very mild spoilers, but spoilers nevertheless):

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Walder Frey shows up as a toddler in one of the later stories and Dunk muses on how annoying he is, whilst Maester Aemon, who is about 10-12 years old at the time and is Egg's older brother, plays an off-page role in one of their adventures.

A spoiler if you've read ADWD:

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Bloodraven - the three-eyed crow - is set up, explained and even briefly appears in the short stories.

There's also references to Dunk and Egg - Ser Duncan the Tall and Prince Aegon V Targaryen - in ASoS and AFFC. Jaime reads about Dunk in a book in the third volume, whilst Aemon reminisces about both of them and their adventures in AFFC. The TV producers even dropped a reference to them in the TV series (when Old Nan asks the crippled Bran if he wants to her about Ser Duncan the Tall and Bran says no).
