    Default The Hun Inferno!

It's been a while that I played a BI campaign as WRE. In the Balkans, I faced a Hunnic invasion. Here, I want to share with you the most amazing siege battle, I ever experienced in a TW game as defender.

    Enjoy the HUN INFERNO!

My campaign went quite well and I managed to weaken the Hunnic hordes in several bridge battles. Finally, the Huns last major forces approached and laid siege to Sirmium - as you can see - a well-prepared garrison was waiting for them.

The battle begins, the Huns are attacking with siege towers, ladders and rams. My archers are firing flaming arrows at them - nice to look at.

As you can see, the Huns are coming from 3 sides, but only one army has siege weapons - that's why I concentrate my forces in the SE corner.

The siege tower is coming closer and closer - my archers are firing - but nothing! I am getting nervous - the tower is almost reaching the walls...

My archers have failed - the tower has reached the wall. My comitatenses are preparing to hurl pila at the attackers:

    ------------------ End of Part 1 -----------------------------

Tell me, if you like my little story, and whether you want me to show you more.

To be continued if you wish. Rep is welcome ;-)

I'll post some more pictures tomorrow. It was indeed an epic siege. I won't tell the outcome yet to keep up the excitement.

I did have some exciting defensive siege battles later on M2TW and VI2, there mostly defending with inferior forces against huge odds. But this siege was outstanding due to its massive scale. Later, you'll see the body piles - incredible - a real inferno. Come back for part 2 tomorrow.

    I look forward to it

Might have to start a new BI campaign as the Saxons this week.

    Thanks for the inspiration.

    Hun INFERNO Part 2

Now, even the ladders have reached my walls. It doesn't look good for my defenders.

The flaming arrows don't do enough damage and don't really scare the Hunnic horde either...

Too many of them reach the ladders, climb and jump onto the walls - into the arms of my eager Comitatenses. The Huns' infantry mostly consists of spearmen. Their advantage is numbers, mine is quality - who will prevail?

I was confident I could defeat the Huns on the walls - but I knew my archers had to prevent the ram from reaching the gate. I concentrated the fire on the ram - 3 units of archers firing flaming arrows - but they utterly failed as well.

The gate is breached. The Huns are rushing towards my gate. The inferno is on...

My Barbarian spearmen are not exactly the strongest unit - their morale is quite low - and now they are facing thousands of Huns rushing the gate - eye in eye with them. You can see on the battle map that the 2 other armies have also come around - I now have more than 4000 Huns trying to push through my gate...

I am pulling my badly beaten up spearmen back from the gate - the Huns get a taste of boiling oil... but will that be enough to fend them off?

    ------- End of part 2 ---------

Urgently, have to get ready for work. Come back for part 3 - and don't forget to rep the poster ;-)

A really nice siege. The only time i had one was when numidia sieged Carthage with 4 20stack. i had only archer, and shoot down 50% of them, before they retried

    Part 3:

My spearmen are holding the gate against the odds, but more and more of the Huns' best cavalry are attacking them:

    VICTORY!

    The surviving Huns are retreating:

Look at the piles of bodies... have you ever seen anything like this? Thousands of dead Hun warriors are littering the area outside the gate of Sirmium:

    What carnage!

Inside the gates, outside the gates - as the battle was raging forward and backward - total butchery:

A kill ratio of 1:8... a truly heroic victory!

After this battle, the Huns' fate was sealed. The last survivors are annihilated in a field battle soon after. And then, the Gothic hordes are coming... but that is a different story.

Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed my WRE campaign - an entirely different challenge from the normal - start small and expand campaigns.

I hope you enjoyed my little picture story.

Oh yeah... Try defending Constantinople against all of the hunnic and serration hordes consecutively, with only 10 units. I wish I have screens.

Nice battle mate! I've had similar ones myself, and I thoroughly enjoyed them as well as my own WRE campaign.

EDIT: It seems that I can't rep you, because I have to spread some rep around first.

I played VH campaign, normal battle. I like facing huge odds, but not on unrealistic terms - like militia slaughtering elite troops.

On RTW vanilla, I got besieged only once in a full campaign as Scipii - in turn 2 by Carthage on Sicily. Since this is a fun element of the game, I actually liked BI better, because the hordes tend to act more aggressively.

nhinhonhinho: Fantastic battle! Seems like the Huns managed to breach the walls and you fought them of in the streets of the city.

I have never tried ERE, guess I should do that as well. Somehow, BI has always fascinated me more than RTW. Although RTW factions are more diverse. In BI, though, the starting situations are much more diverse.

Does anyone else have some great Kill-the-Huns pictures?
