Default When am I too old to have children?

As the title says, just wondering when my king is too old to have children. He's 45 and I just married him to a far-away princess who is 38.

The guy did have an adopted son back when he was like 30 but I went and got him accidentally killed

Does he have to be sitting in a settlement or can I have him fighting/besieging?

Also, anyone know how to tell how old an external princess is before I go making the deal? I didn't see if their age shows up by their face on the diplomacy screen.

I'm running Stainless Steel 6.4 but figured this shouldn't make a difference

Just like real life men never stop producing um you know, while women do hit menopause, so it's not your king you should worry about it's the princess, you could cheat and add some fertility traits, pm me to show you how.

I think I saw a queen of mine have a healthy baby boy at the age of 42 ...

I think princesses leave if they are unmarried between 40 and 45 and you get a message saying past childbearing age

No even if they're married but haven't had a child

so are the chances of having children pretty 'realistic' for my now 50 year old king? I don't know much about medieval times but I imagine that as in previous times, nobility would have some kind of "internal obligation". (I see from Ransom Locke that we can give him that moral obligation)

You start the game with King Alfonso and this impotent guy as his only biological son... fool has no kids while his sisters are creating a litter of males every day.

Even if he does have a son he'll have no chance, since there are so many older cousins waiting for the throne. But if we can at least squeeze one male heir out of this old punk we may actually have a chance at preserving the original bloodline (paternally speaking)

This brings me to my new question... does the game care whether the individual is of royal blood from his mother or father? I see the kids of my original princesses all have "royal blood" traits, but I wonder if this male had a kid whether the boy would have an even stronger connection and stronger trait? Or would the only thing really making a closer connection be the same last name?

    Thank you again

He just has to grow up before his granddad dies., then he'll be heir

No he won't. If his cousins have higher authority, one of them will become heir. The system has no preference for bloodline. Sad, but true.

If you want your bloodline to produce heirs, keep in mind there is a ratio of regions you own, to male family members and generals you have. If you have three regions, and 6 familiy members, the chances of your king or heir getting more kids is close to zero.

Harsh measure to protect your royal bloodline would include never accepting adoptions, never accepting man of the hour, and not letting your princesses mary unless to a foreign king or faction heir (they will not come over to your family tree, thereby 'soiling' your bloodline.

IF the son of the faction heir is already at age and the faction leader dies the faction heir becames king and his son his hair It doesn't matter if the cousins have more authorithy but if the faction leader dies before the faction heir's son become of age the faction heir becomes king and the familiy member with the most authorithy becames faction heir

    This is patently untrue.

The heir might have a son of age, but when he becomes king, the heir crown can STILL pass to another family member. Lots of research has gone into this already, I suggest you read up over here:

This is basically a mod for Stainless Steel, but if you read through the thread you'll see how the passing of the heir crown really happens.

thank you for your responses everyone, It was particularly interesting reading about the ratio of males to regions.

I wonder if young males count (if they have not yet come of age) or if females count. Towards the ratio, that is

The game engine selects the heir, not the mod.

    I think you contradicted yourself.

Above you say that the mod cannot select the heir, then you direct us to a sub-mod named "Next Heir Ancillary (Setting Next Heir)".

In Vanilla the line of succession is similar to that of English Royalty, except that heir presumptives automatically become heir apparents.

I did not contradict myself. The game engine selects the heir based on authority (not bloodline). The mod mentioned makes sure that the person you want as next heir has enough authority to actually become the next heir. I only referred to this mod because the thread explains in detail how the engine selects the next heir.

In Vanilla the line of succession is exactly the same as in any mod, because selection of the next heir is hardcoded - but this specific mod invented an authority ancillary ('next heir crown') that you can pass around so that the engine selects the heir you want (in most, not all cases - there are several issues, if you care to read the thread).

Yesterday I started a new game of Stainless Steel as the Byzantines and Theodore Laskaris had a 3rd daughter at age 56, so you never know. Even in Retrofit which is almost vanilla, Laszlo of Hungary had a 3rd son at age 53.

Another thing you can do so the right generals have kids, when you get a notice that one of your family members can get married, look at his stats. I usually reject if the general has less Han 4 command stars or has a very bad trait. So then your bad generals won't reproduce leaving your good generals which will make better children.

You stop having kids when your trumpet stops being blown.
