Default Good Speaker system for 100 bucks?

Over the summer I've been working up some money and now I feel I can spend some of it on something I've been vaguely but positively interested in - a new speaker system.

I'm looking for a 2.1 or a 5.1 speaker system to go with my computer. I want something that can balance music, movies, and games well. I want it to definitely have good bass. I've read hundreds of reviews and I'd rather get a professional opinion of The Basement. My budget is 100 US dollars. I don't mind if it goes over a little, but the most I can do is 20 bucks over.

PS. I know this sidetracks off the original topic, but does anyone know if there might be a price-drop in the GTX 560 Ti's anytime soon?

Logitech x540, good 5.1 and they're going cheap at most retailers nowadays. If you can find them, they're not in production I believe and when they do get dragged out of a warehouse they sell off fast.

I like them myself, got three sets for the home PC's. Some people complain that the subwoofer is a bit too big considering the overall size of the system, works fine for me though.

Well one route could be getting an second hand HiFi system, with a good amp, a nice 20" sub to power the bass.

HiFi cd(aux) 3.5mm jack linked via the pc 3.5mm jack front out speaker. (2.1)

may not be surround 5.1, but you will be heard

I'm not necessarily looking for loud (although I do like to occasionally send the people upstairs a message that should be heard ) just something that will make explosions, cannons, and warfare in general sound .... "beautiful."

    $135 or $75

My very first speaker purchase was an older revision of the Logitech X-540's and although they have decent sound for their price a good 2.1 system is going to give you overall better, more detailed sound in that pricerange. If you can manage it I'd highly recommend you save a bit more for the Z623's. They have 200 watt RMS power and are THX certified.

I just dug out my first PC speakers from the late 90's the other day. Totally forgot about them. Sub is insane on this thing. Must weigh 50lbs.

At that price point 5.1 and 2.1 will be fairly poor quality.

I would suggest stretching your budget and going for some semi decent 2.0 like the audioengine a5's. I have a pair and the sound quality is truly amazing. Considering their size the produce a very impressive bass as well.
