Default Question from an ex-HoI player

So you guys in the minecraft group of this forum know me, so I thought I'd ask you guys a few questions. I used to player Hearts of Iron 2 and all its expansions quite extensively. My question is, how much more complicated is this game than that one? Would it require me to relearn pretty much everything I learned in HoI?

I'm trying to find myself a strategy game I can get addicted to during the school year and this one looks quite fun, especially with my Minecraft buddies playing it.

Personaly i find it far less complicated.
Technology is a simple slider for each branch, rather then selecting individual techs
Combat is made up of 3 unit types and is a very simplified battle system compared to HoI
    So on and so forth.

Shouldnt take long to relearn a few key differences and get into the fun.

It's definatly easier to play than HOI. Many things that you learned in HOI will carry over as Paradox games are, for the most part, similar. Tech is, as SLN said, very simple to learn. You have sliders that you push back and forth to decide on tech funding and minting. Combat is simple. With three different unit types. Calvary, Cannon, and Infantry. The time system is the same, although it's dragged out over 400+ years. If you haven't already you should get the demo off of steam. It's not really indicative of the final game +expansions but it'll let you get the hang of things. If you have anymore questions you can just message me on Steam. <3

HOI confuses me, EU3 is much simpler, imo

A good EU3 player is different from a good HoI2 player. A good EU3 player simply needs to know the various events, slider configurations and ideas that go best with an overall plan for each game. A good HoI2 player is, in my experience (which is 2 years), someone that can simply exploit the game mechanics against the AI or you need to be extremely adept at setting up false tactical weaknesses for your enemy to go for, before you surround them (MP). In other words, simply knowing the information about EU3 allows you to pick up the game a lot faster than you would in HoI2. For a MP game, you just need to have an overall strategy and be adept at player to player diplomacy.

Well that's actually a good thing for me. The main thing I disliked about HoI2 was all the hard work I would have to put in to starting a major offensive. Having to form a whole false sense of security and divert armies to different areas to prepare for encirclements. EU3 sounds more like my kind of game because it isn't quiteee as complicated.

I've only played HoI3 but I've played both it and EU3 on and offline extensively and I can tell you EU3 is infinitely simpler, but also different: it isn't ez-mode HoI but it is less complex.

The main thing about the two games are the focuses: HoI is a game revolving around one war with an emphasis on tactics, while in EU3, strategy is superior and losing a war doesn't mean getting annexed.

Not true. You can't declare war if at -3 stability, the lower partner in a personal union, a vassal or against someone in the same war as you .
