Default Windows 8 & a new comp for me: Help me figure this out folks

    Hi everyone,

    O.K. Look:

    I have a P.C. which is bordering 5 years.

I upgraded from Vista to Win 7, I added 2GB of RAM, and I bought an Nvidia 260 GTX overclocked video card.

My current specs are as follows:
    Win 7 prof. 64 bit
    8 GB of RAM DDR2
    Nvidia 260 GTX overclocked
Square monitor (Not a wide screen model nor is it the old "box" type monitor, it is a thin one)
    16x lighscribe DVD writer/player

Now, I know that computers can die at any moment per se.

I want to buy a new computer when Windows 8 is out and not buy another Windows 7 machine.
What are some of the new specs I should look at?

BTW, I have never made my own P.C. as I simply have no friends who can help or who care, so I have to buy at Bestbuy or some crap like that.....yeah I know.

Also, I like Intel and I like Nvidia too.
I enjoy the Windows platform, not Linux or the MacOS.

    ANY help would be appreciated,
    Thank you, hellas1.5

Windows 8 will come out sometime in 2012 could be early, could be late. By that time any specific current parts won't be relevant so suggestions today are practically pointless. Especially considering you'll be looking at prebuilts... to get a good GPU on a prebuilt you're gonna need to drop some serious cash (several hundred over the system's actual value) so basically just come back here when Win8 is about to be released and bump this thread

Otherwise the rough estimentation that should roughly hold true with your favored brands considered:

    intel i5 or i7 CPU

    Nvidia GTX 660 GPU

    8GB DDR3 RAM
    My Gaming PC
    CPU: intel i7-2600k Quad-core @ 3.80Ghz.
    Motherboard: Asus Sabertooth P67
    RAM: 8GB G.SKILL Ares DDR3 1600
GPU: 2, Zotac 448 core GTX 560ti's in SLI
    Storage: Crucial M4 256GB SSD
    PSU: Corsair CMPSU-1000HX Semi-modular
Case: Coolermaster Cosmos II XL-ATX Full Tower
Heatsink: Thermaltake HR-02 Passive CPU Cooler
Keyboard: Logitech G19 with LCD Display
    Mouse: Logitech G700 Wireless
    Screens: LG Infinia 55LW5600 55 inch LED ~ Cinema 3D ~ 3 in Nvidia 3D Surround

hellas1, I guess you are Greek so, with all this financial crisis, there's absolutely no reason to waste money on a new pc. I have also a pc around 3 years which I have updated with an nVidia 9600 super GT and 4 GB of Ram. The pc runs smoothly and it can basically run games such as Crisis 2 with maxed out settings.
Under the patronage of Emperor Maximinus Thrax
"Steps to be taken in case Russia should be forced out of war considered. Various movements [of ] troops to and from different fronts necessary to meeting possible contingencies discussed. Conference also weighed political, economic, and moral effect both upon Central and Allied powers under most unfavorable aspect from Allied point of view. General conclusions reached were necessity for adoption of purely defensive attitude on all secondary fronts and withdrawing surplus troops for duty on western front. By thus strengthening western front [those attending] believed Allies could hold until American forces arrive in numbers sufficient to gain ascendancy."

    @Manuel,

Yes, I'm Greek but born in the U.S.A. I actually have dual citizenship.

    Anyway,

Yes my machine runs fine but It's just that if my machine dies, I don't want to buy another Win 7 based machine.

BTW, I'm not rich either...I lost my State of New Hampshire job this last Thursday.

    Me Katalaves?

Don't be scared of building you own either. I don't think it is necessary to have someone to help you. If you end up buying the new computer next year then you have plenty of time to familiarise youself with the hardware and terminology. There are a lot of guides (I think there are some stickied in this forum), and I would guess there are probably YouTube videos as well.
I would reccomend having a look at bit-tech.net they give suggested builds at different price points.

Yep dont be afraid of building yourself, its very difficult to mess up if you purchase the correct parts which anyone here can ensure you do. The relevant cables and cards will only fit in the correct socket, basically if it plugs in you put it in the right place lol.

Save yourself some money and better warranties as each individual component will be covered as a seperate entity. Once you have built your first one every other pc build is identical.

Related question I have that I've been wondering for a while, prior to me getting my next new computer (probably another 2 years or so) would it be worth buying a really and old computer for like £50 in order to practice building a PC? (I've never built one before and to save some money I would like my future ones to be built by me if possible)
According to this poll, 80%* of TGW fans agree that "The mod team is devilishly handsome" *as of 12/10 (its true )

If your that concerend about it, that could be a good idea but to be honest my first ever pc build was a £750 system and I managed it with no prior experience in about an hour and a half.

It's way too early to know what'll be a standard system in maybe two years.
Besides, the OS isn't what's going to affect your component choice. I've got old machines built in the XP era running Windows 7 perfectly, and there's no reason to assume 8 will suddenly demand a huge jump in hardware.
Some day I'll actually write all the reviews I keep promising...
