Gaining Bad traits vs gaining good traits
Ive been playing for a while and ive realized that so many of my great generals or family members always seem to be getting traits like corrupt, embezzler, bad taxman so much more often then they are getting positive traits. Is because ive kept them in a town for too long, not building or taxing enough?

i've tended to notice that you will get fewer negative traits, if you put settlements with family members in on the low tax rate

Your total treasury also affects it IIRC.
It's simple: The more cash you earn the more do your generals tend to take some of it.

Re: Gaining Bad traits vs gaining good traits
If you have over 40k in your treasury at the beginning of the turn, you have a decent chance of getting corrupt traits showing up. At 100k, the chance increases.
If you have 100% movement points, there is a small chance of getting a bad trait (or good with even smaller chances (good chance will get bigger the more economic and political buildings you have, bad will grow larger if you have any taverns)).
If you have medium or especially low taxes when you finish a nonmilitary building in a city, you have a chance of getting a bad trait (opposite is true - always set taxes to high or very high when there is a general in the settlement and a building is almost done).

Good traits are better than bad traits.

Re: Gaining Bad traits vs gaining good traits
This well written guide really answers all questions - I bring it up because while having a bloated bank account can bring bad traits, not taxing enough (getting yellow face [or blue] instead of green) can mean the difference between good and bad Taxman traits:

This might be useful too, as it lists all traits and their requirements.
