    Default Free upkeep seems odd....

    Hi,
In my latest campaign as the HRE I have noticed that certain "feudal" units such as feudal foot knights and mailed foot knights say that they get free upkeep in castles but then never do. This might just be my install but it seems odd

oh and I have 6.4 RR/RC permanent arrows, and watch towers. I have it installed onto steam as well if that makes any difference.

    Thank you in advance,

edit: one quick question when does the new era event occur? The one that allows you to recruit new units.

Wasn't it necessary to be able to actually build those units in those castles in order to receive the free upkeep?

You don't have to recruit those units in the same settlement, the settlement, however, does need the ability to recruit them. Feudal foot knights require a Fortress to train, putting them in a Castle won't grant free upkeep. Normal (mounted) feudal knights will be free though (in a castle) as the requirements are met. It's the same thing with cities. Saracen militia need a city watch to recruit, all settlements with lower rank barracks are not going to give free upkeep (to saracen militia).

    There you go.

Afaik its the first units that entered the settlement no matter the cost? So if you start by recruiting 2 free upkeep spear militias and then go on to 2 feudal knights the next turn the 2 spear militias will remain free upkeep and not be bumped by the higher cost feudal knights.

The units with the highest upkeep costs will be used whatever else you do; those spear militia will be bumped when you recruit or move in a unit of knights.

@ Ichon ; I once noticed my FL (playing France) got some trait (great protector or something) granting an additional 2 or 3 free upkeep slots in all my cities and castle (depending on their size) - was pretty nice though the fool died only a couple turns later.

In my experience the more expensive units will automatically move to the free spots ...

    Thanks for the fast responses!!

One more question if you don't mind: when does the new era event occur? also, if there is a thread that lists the different events that would be great too
