To know for sure what speed you are getting, use an online speed tester.

Who is your Internet Service Provider, and what kind of modem are you using; is it a cheap one? I have had terribly frustrating problems with cheap modems given to me by ATT. They have zero ventilation and overheat resulting in extremely slow speeds. Check for overheating and try unplugging the modem allowing it to cool off.

You could also have viruses, trojans, or neighbors stealing your internet connection. Put a password on the router and run some scans to check for malware.

Try getting rid of the router. Get cable.

Over the past 2 years you have started no less than 25 different technical "help me" threads in the basement here... this just boggles my mind.

In this particular instance your description is far too vague for any precise help to be given.

yeah i dont understand the internet for the life of me. computers, i can do (mostly) but the internet is beyond me. it just seems to do whatever it wants. sorry about being vauge, but i dont realy know how to describe the problem other than its slow. im with virgin media and using the modem they gave me. i will put a password on and check for viruses to see if that helps. thanks

Just a shot in the dark: you do realize that if you a download lots of files and your download client is configured so it can use your max bandwidth your internet browsing session will be slow and laggy....?

Also, if your house has lots of people using the same modem/router the performance will be decreased, especially if someone is downloading lots of stuff.

last point, sometimes unplugging your router for 5 mins can help some issues..

    good luck

That's a good point. Sometimes simply unplugging both the router and the modem will produce positive results.
