Default H50 Leak... RIP soundcard + Videocard

Well... I was playing BC2 the other night and It started to slow down to 5 fps, My immediate thought was that I was overheating, I quickly checked the temps and it was at 120c!!!! I quickly felt if the fan was moving and it was... I turned my PC off.

re-mounted the fan+radiator and turned it back on, It was running fine for about 2 hours, but the pump was making a clicking/guttural noise. I kept an eye on the temps to see what they were and they were around 64c idle - Fine for finishing my homework.

I woke up the next morning and turned it on and it kept rebooting... awe crap. I came to the conclusion that I'll just take it off and put on the stock fan *shiver*. Upon taking H50 out of my PC I noticed some dried up residue around my heatpipes near the CPU, and on my videocard....and my soundcard. Not good. When I took off the H50 there was a leak at the base of the pump... my hands were all wet.

I hope Corsair covers my parts. I'm a poor college student and it'll take me a year to save up to replace these.

That's the main reason i've stayed away from watercooling, they have a low fail rate, but there's still a change it will leak and everything up. I hope they cover your parts(heh) and if they do i would stick with good old fashioned air cooling.

And this is why I prefer air cooling.

I was actually considering getting one of these... it seems much less appealing now.

Ive read that they go out of their way to replace parts, and usually upgrade things. Its starts by taking photos and sending them, and then you might actually have to send your whole PC to them, on their dime. Sucks, but you might end up with something even better in the end.

And I would stay away. The air coolers now are so good there is no real reason to water cool just for gaming. And the whole Corsair H-line leaves a lot to be desired. It certainly isn't as cool as my old Noctua, and I'm thinking of going back.

Heat sinks, with some air cooling, are still my preference.

A properly set up heat sink array can get everything running cooler than any other system I've encountered. It does require you to fabricate the heat sinks yourself however.

I don't trust them units myself, in my custom water loops I always build the pump at the bottom of the case and I make sure I buy quality components.

The radiator still needs a fan to cool the water.

Which is why a manually fabricated heat sink system is fantastic win

true but fan is a lot easier to clean than say my metal noctua heatsink (yeah i know compressed air does the trick).

was very tempted to go water awhile back but then my temps were so good on air i decided it wasnt worth it. and i was changing gpus quite often.

now gpu isnt the problem and i'd rather a cooler cpu! (well ofc gpu would be nice as well).

perhaps i'll seek out your advice if i go water one day.

    True..

I guess that's my only problem with water cooling, essentially want your GPU(s) in the loop also, but GPU cool blocks are expensive and you risk voiding the warrany if you mod it yourself.
Buying a water cooled version can also be very expensive, and if you do go to the trouble of adding your GPU to the loop it makes an upgrade much more work and expense...

I just sold my H50. My temps were terrible at 42-45 idle and up around 80 at load. Even in the summer my Noctua was 32/60. I actually bought the Hyper 212 Plus, which feels odd tossing such a cheap cooler ($25) into this thing. But I see nothing but great reviews.

Im planning on pushing from 3.5GHz to 4GHz for BF3, and the H50 just scares me when I think of that.

Dont bother, Battlefield 3 will be more GPU dependent then anything, as long as your not trying to run it on a Intel Atom

I dont find it any easier for some reason. And the fins on the rad are very delicate. Touch them at all and they bend.

Corsair isnt in the business of losing money. They took an OEM design for the H50 (and so on) and improved on the safety aspect by making it truly sealed. If you go to their forums, the people who have had leak issues are incredibly small. Like two people. That would bring the total I have seen to four, including Wheelchair.

Owning one myself - my issue is not concern over leaks, but concern over it not being as good as my Noctua, that cost less.
