    Welcome to the forums Winterwolf00. Unfortunately, your question has been asked ad tedium, so you will likely get some frustrated responses. Rest assured in knowing that many people have troubles with trolls, as they break out of the typical mold of total war units and prove incredibly difficult to handle compared to any other. The thing about trolls is that they do what they were designed by the creators of this mod to do, and they do it very well. Trolls are meant to wreck havoc on enemy lines before the main battle force (whether that be Ootmm, Gundabad, or Mordor) commits to the charge.

    Trolls do their job perfectly in fact. The problem is that the inherent limitations of this game engine simultaneously causes them to lack any obvious counters. Ranged units have significantly reduced effectiveness against small units, and that carries on over to trolls even though they are technically larger (the game does not make that distinction). 'Flanking' against trolls is rather redundant when they are actually inside your unit. As super Heavy Infantry, they do not have any inbuilt weakness such as the spear vulnerability of cavalry units (and should in fact perform better against spear units as a result).

    As to your ORIGINAL question. Many people will suggest a variety of soft counters that take up a large portion of your of your management (cavalry charges while they are still out in the open, concentrated arrow fire as they approach your lines, militia fodder, ap units). I, however, will tell you that trolls HAVE a hard counter. The answer to your question is Halberds, Halberds, Halberds! Halberds, which already perform marvelously against basic heavy infantry, carry their effectiveness over to trolls. One unit of Dwarven halberds can take on any troll unit at a third the cost of the actual Troll unit, even the dreaded battle trolls of Mordor! The combination of many consecutive, high strength, ap attacks that a halberd unit can dish out in ranks devastates those oversized apes. Try it out in custom battle. This is truly a hard counter in the sense that it requires minimal micro management and is incredibly cost effective.

    Of course, there is the problem that, among those faction most like to face Trolls in battle, only Dwarves have access to halberds, but hey, that is just one more reason why Dwarves rock socks. Should you be playing as anything else... well, see my soft counter suggestions, and good luck!

    [Edit] Also, Gondor has the Fountain guard. Expensive buggers, but quite remarkable. They essentially act like a halberd unit. In battle, hold them in reserve until the Trolls hit your lines, then send them off to enact damage control (Guard mode and Spearwall OFF). The key is to try to minimize casualties to the tower guard while doing so; they must not take the brunt of a troll's charge. Leave that for the miltia, thats what your paying em for

    Since I have played Elven nations only up till now on TATW, I can say one thing - Ents. They're basically trolls squared and truly a HARD counter. So, including Venatio's advice, three factions should be covered now.

    Oh noes! Sorry for being a dick in the first reply. The amount of troll threads has fed the dark side in me

    Nevertheless i still have to recommend the almighty search button to you to avoid being attacked by internet trolls as you see here

    I never have any problems with trolls as long as you use tough late game troops and cavalry on them (Maybe even some siege weapons if you can hit them ) even Olog-hai go down pretty easily. And if your playing as the dwarves a single unit of guards of Khazad-Dum and Dragon slayers of ered mithrin can kill even Olog-Hai and like the others said there are tons of threads on this you should look them up. (Am I the only one who thinks that trolls are FUN to fight??? )

    Trolls! 3 units of troll catapults and 2 of normal ones from the begining, those 9 left killed everything on the wall before they died

    dwarves besieged gundabad, I though I will win cos I had 3 snow troll, but no because they just dropped in the hoplites of third age, the vault guards. I just simply lost all of my units because the guards just work like hoplites, cant hit them in front of, but behind neither, some of the just turn around and start they slaughter, I got halberdiers and fellers, not useless snagas, the trolls died after 5 minute.

    But...it's not impossible.

    1.Shoot them. The majority of their protection is Defence Skill. Missiles ignore this. The actual troop you require for this depends on faction, but every faction has something with enough Missile Attack that even the Olog-Hai with their 9 armour isn't that much of of an issue.

    2. Swarm them. Their low unit counts works as more of a disadvantage generally, as with so many men in your units they fall prey to stun-lock by animation, and constantly taking hits in the back(Nulling Defence Skill). I've seen 1 Mountain Troll unit lose to two Orc Raiders with both unsupported(No Generals). They have killing issues, as they do not have the Area Attack trait-each Troll can kill only one man per swing, so even with one unit of Trolls and one unit of even militia-grade infantry, it'll take 10+swings to kill the militia.

    3,Siege Weapons: Related to number 1. There's not much that withstands a siege shot.

    4.Armour-pierce: related to both 1 and 2. Even with your units attacking with missiles, striking from the back(Defence Skill doesn't count from behind), that armour will be a pain. So get things that can deal with it if at all possible.

    Then it's a matter of whittling their 6 HP down.

    NEVER fight Trolls on walls unless you're trying to hold them in place to be shot at: their stat setup makes them perfect up there-only one or two dudes in units can fight, and they're penalised by the lack of space. Better if they come up for you to run from there and regroup where you can surround and kill properly.

    Forget the Trolls at least they can be Killed... watch for those Mumakil (sp?) they cant be brought down by archers only lucky shots from catapults

    I had the most OUTRAGEOUS!!!! experience in my years of playing Total War, 2 groups of Mumakil basically annihilated my entire army!!!!, worst this is the finest army I have with most units under it with Gold Chevrons, my 4 groups of archers(the best/most advance dunedain/arnor archers) had finished their arrows and only 2 oillephant dead on the battlefield.... with nothing to kill them, I tried concentrating most groups on a single Mumakil, and guess what? nothing's left on them, the damn animals just step on my soldiers, not even cavalry charge does damage...( guess the Rohan charge on the movie was never made unto account eh...).... worst,

    so, TATW is a great modded game, but IMHO, these god-like units makes the whole experience frustratingly-disgusting......

    I saw a single group of rohan javelin cavalry killing almost a full mumakil group. So javelins working against them (Pelargir marines??)
