Default A question about compatibility mode

I have Windows 7 x64, and it seems like older games that run on it are the exception. And I'd honestly be fine with that if people's solution wasn't compatibility mode 99% of the time. My question is this: does it actually do anything? I mean, I've had countless programs crash on launch, and every time I try compatibility mode, and it has never done anything. Am I alone in this, or is it just a flawed feature?
I thought about writing something clever, but then I remembered I'm not clever enough.

Unfortunately compatibility mode only works for a bare handful of programs. Plus you have to properly select which mode and settings within that mode or you get your crash. Best bet is look at steam, and amazon to see if the publisher has released a updated game or browse the web (good ole Google) to see if someone else has found a way to make it work. Failing all else you will just have to plug and poke with the settings in compatibility mode to see if you can make it work or give up and move on.

Part of the problem is the new OS and 64bit, but part is also the changes in directX and other drivers.
