ive been having trouble with the launcher at first it wouldnt start and would come up with error messages now (after changing mod to activvision frome creative assembley files, actvision is my main one for some reason) it now says something like script error battle lighting min lighting control, can anyone help

It sounds like it hasn't installed correctly. Can you tell us the OS you are on, where you installed it and the exact error message.

emm windows 7, strategy informer and i cant tel u exactley but script error descr battle map lighting and fog control expecting min light 0.5

OK, windows 7, not sure what you mean by Strategy Informer. I meant, where did you install it, which directory? But as you're on steam I'm not sure how that works as don't use it.

You really need to give the exact error, check as well in here

In particular, as you are on steam, try the replacement launcher that Paedric created.

Also, I didn't mean to rename the file, it was already an exe, you're just not showing extensions (which is the default behaviour). If you look on the tool bar at the right hand side (standard windows 7 theme) there is a "more options" button, if you select "details" it will list the files and folders. Then use the Organize menu on the left hand side, choose "folder and search options", then "view" and then look for "Hide extensions for known file types", deselect this and you should see the full file name.

Oh OK, I thought you were on steam for some reason.

I meant where did you install it? With Windows 7, using Program Files can be a pain, the alternative is to turn off UAC which also works. Can you give the exact sequence you've installed in and to which directories.

Personally, I'd do:

Install RTW to c:\Games\RTW, patch and put BI/Alex on
Rename this to c:\Games\RomeBase
copy to c:\Games\RomaSurrectum
put my installer and the cab files in c:\Games\src
Install to c:\Games\RomaSurrectum

This has always worked for me. Let me know what you have done.
