In the Teutonic campaign, I've heard about the Kalmar Union and I haven't seen them before.
What is it exactly and how do you get to play as them?
Thanks in advance![]()

The Kalmar Union is (in the Teutonic campaign) basically you as Denmark with a new flag and a few new units.
As said, you need to play as Denmark and own these cities: Abo, Visby, Kalmar, Uppsala and Goteborg.
As soon as you own them you need to get rid of the King of Norway. You can decide wether to kill him in battle, assassinate him or just wait till he dies a natural way.
The trick is to own all of those cities above and have the King of Norway die without destroying the Norway faction. If the faction is destroyed, you do not form the Kalmar Union.
When you form the Kalmar Union, all of Norway's family members become your family members.
But you have to wait the event that says which territories you have to conquer in order to form the Kalmar Union. If you defeat Norway before this event appears, Norway will simply be destroyed and you won't be able to form your Kalmar Union
The main benefit is you get a fortress without having to take it by siege. The roster update is bugged, so all you get is Norway and a fancy new flag.
Jon had taken Donal and Benjen’s advice to heart: Sam may be fat and pathetic, but he is still a member of the watch, and one of the few black brothers who isn't a rapist or thief. (out of context, this sounds ridiculously racist)

Yeah, I thought you were supposed to gain access to new units - like, that they kept out some norse units to be unlockable specifically by forming the Kalmar Union.
It is a bit too much trouble to go through for nothing but two weak regions (= you could´ve taken them easily anyway, and even then you would get the excitement of an extra couple of battles) and a fancy flag.
It feels good roleplaying about how the Kalmar Union goes about to bring unity to all the Baltic areas, but still, not worth the trouble.
Does anyone know if there is a patch or mod that adress this issue?
I doubt it, but might as well ask, right![]()
Heart of silver, Mind of gold
Fist of iron and Tongue to scold
Proud to be a Viking!
Well the only unit which deserves from the Kalmar Union is the Gotland Footman

No way, the Svenner is the most epic cavalry unit in the game.
Try Svenner vs. Ritterbruder 1v1 in a custom battle. Make sure the Svenner has max formation width, and see who wins (hint: it's not the Ritterbruder who wins).
The Sami Axeman is also very good because it adds another unit pool to your castles, to allow you to spam more infantry.
The 1.5 patch fixes that issue. Without the patch, you can't build any Kalmar Union units.Does anyone know if there is a patch or mod that adress this issue?
So is it only in a mod? Or Vanilla?
HA, success! the Union has arrived.![]()
