    Default Domus Postumii Albini

Welcome to the Domus of Lucius Postumius Albinus

    Lucius Postumius Albinus:

    Basic Information:

    Name: Lucius Postumius Albinus
    Age: 40
    Interests: sports, wine, poetry
    Marital Status: Unmarried
    Offices Held: N/A
    Class: Patrician

Lucius Postumius Albinus is a wealthy Patrician who owns a sprawling estate in the heart of city of Rome itself. Lucius inherited a large amount of land and wealth from his father, who was a somewhat successful merchant. He is a military veteran with 20 years military experience, but is rather a rather inexperienced politician. He is a heavy drinker, loves poetry and enjoys hosting parties as an excuse to show off his Palatine estate. He loves the Republic and all it stands for and will never betray it or the senate.

The people view him as a kind and generous man and he is always ready to help an aspiring, patriotic young Roman. He likes to think of himself as a fair player and wouldn't think of trying to sabotage another man's effort. He is a loyal friend, but he has been known to hold a grudge in a few instances. His father gave him another great gift besides wealth, the ability to lie with a straight face. He does have one very important and well know weakness however; drink. When drunk, which is quite often, his character takes a turn for the worse. He'll make undesirable agreements, give away valuable information and lose all sense of reason.

Lucius loves company, so come inside, lie down and have have drink. He is always ready to talk about current events and his military experiences.

Marcus Atrius Merula, prospective (and almost certain) Consul, arrives at the door of the Domvs Postumii.

He knocks on the door and waits patiently to be permitted entrance.

'Hmmm, I wonder how much old Albinus has changed from the legion days?' Marcus laughs to himself at the thought. How things have turned around, Albinus used to be Marcus' superior in the first Legion, 'and now look at me! Almost a Consul of Rome whilst my old Tribune is only just entering the Curia!'

"Yes, of course you can let him in," said Lucius yelling to his servant. Lucius remembered Marcus fondly from his old days in the legion and was very excited to hear that he was still alive and well. Although he had been drinking Lucius almost runs to the door to meet his old friend and subordinate. "Welcome to my house, old friend, come inside and have a drink." After Lucius had assured that the wine was the finest available, he finally takes the time to ask: "What brings you here old friend?"

After hearing his old friend had returned to Rome Caius had immediately left his mansion, he knocked at the big gate and shouted at the slave. 'Go tell your master that his friend Caius is here to see him.' He observed the house, large. Well preserved. Lucius his father had done a fine job all those years. Sad he had passed away.

Marcus takes a goblet from a slave and answers Lucius' question, Ah just catching up with some old friends Lucius, it seems I have this habit of losing them fairly quickly! He thinks of Sophus, Victor and Lepidus...

He takes a sip, So how is it you got out of the legion, I swear that I thought you would stay for your entire life! And what in Jupiter's name made you decide to join this rat pack in the Curia! Especially at this time....

At that moment a messanger barges into the room he pulls out a sealed scroll, For Marcus of the Atrii, he says out of breath.

Marcus takes the scroll, breaks the seal, reads the contents of the letter, then raises his head to the heavens with a sigh of gratitude.
I am Consul, he hands the scroll to Lucius, smiling.

The men are then interupted by a loud knock at the door, Another one? Your house is busy today Lucius!

"I congratulate you wholeheartedly on becoming consul!" While Lucius feels a bit of envy to see his subordinate above him in the hierarchy, he feels that staying friends with Marcus would still be highly advantageous. "As I'm sure you know, my health has been degrading over the past couple of years, I simply was no longer fit for campaigning. Upon my return to Rome, I wanted to continue my work for the Roman people and could you think of a better way to do it?"A slave runs up to Lucius informing him that a man named Caius was here to see him, claiming to be his friend. "Let him in!" Lucius announced warmly, "and make sure to bring out some more wine!"

Caius walks into the house and follows the slave towards the room where Marcus and Lucius where waiting. He notices Merula in the corner. What would Gaius his father been doing here? He stepped towards Lucius and smiled at him, the scar on his face stretching out. 'Lucius! It's been over a year since I last saw you. Back then I was still Caius of the Sempronii, military tribune of the triarii. Now I am Caius of the Geminii, senator of Rome!' He shakes his hand and takes a seat.
The slave returns and hands him a goblet of wine. After a sip he speaks again. 'I see you already have a visitor.' He nods and smiles at Merula, silently greeting him. 'It's always busy if you return to Rome after such a long period of absence. My condolences by the way, I heard your father passed away not that long ago. Aulus was a wise man, it is sad we lose such valuable assets to our society so oft.'

"I am glad to see you in such good health, old friend! I never thought you would have recovered after the day you were wounded, I was quite sure your death was certain, but it was the Gods' will that you lived. You, my friend, must truly be bound for great things!" Lucius tells his slave to bring more wine, by now it's becoming clear to his guests that he isn't very sober. "Don't feel sorrow for the death of my father, for he lived a long a fruitful life, his accomplishments shall be remembered by many. So, tell me, what has happened to you in the year that I have been gone?"

Caius rubs the scar on his cheek and smiles bitterly. His souvenir of the siege of Bononia. It was the last time he had seen Lucius. His principes had been in trouble so he had joined them in front, to raise morale. On that moment this filthy Gaul swung his sword over his face. He fell down on the ground, blood was everywhere. But his men had fought to protect him. He still remembered seeing Lucius, standing there, overseeing the lines as he was transported past him for treatment. At that time his brother was dying, less than a mile away. He pushed away those thoughts. 'Yes, I was lucky that day. That stinking Gaul was not that good with his sword, only a deep cut. My brother however was less unfortunate, a javelin pierced his chest. It was an unlucky day for our family.' He stares at the floor for a while. 'But enough sad talk! I heard you are also a senator now Lucius, I'm great to know that. Old friends in the Senate are the best a senator can wish for!'

Marcus steps towards Caius, And new friends I trust Dives, smiling cheekily. So, with some new blood in the Senate this year, thankfully, I ask both of you, what would you most wish to see achieved, our aims may be very similar indeed...

Caius smiled crooked at Marcus. 'To you, father of my friend, I feel I can be honest.' He stares into the distance, slightly up towards the sky. 'I do not have a clear goal, I believe in fate. Fate guides all men but it expects you to take a little action in your own hands. I felt I needed to be a senator, Sophus did not agree. So I helped fate a little.' He smiles mysteriously, not realizing he sounds pretty weird.
'In the end I will just throw at it, Consul, Censor, those things. I'm not a man to sit still at home and do nothing, making money has no use for I have plenty. In the Senate, I will fight for things I deem necessary. And yes, I do realize I am not pointing out any direct political opinions here but I am a switcher I think, I follow those who I deem as wise and I stop supporting them once I think they make a stupid proposal.'
He rubs his chin. 'As a general outline one could say I don't feel a lot for supporting the poor, they are helpless and will remain helpless. I think it is better to improve the state and economy, that way everyone profits. If the total wealth rises, those poor people might get something too.'

Caius was now getting enthusiastic. 'And the military is very important. Right now we are a defensive nation, only trying to fight when others want to fight us, but Rome has such great potential! Her armies could make the entire world tremble if our landmass would be larger, those barbarians in the north. They can be overthrown in ease. The Illyrians, those filthy pirates, get them as soon as possible! And when we are powerful enough, we can get those Carthaginians. And those Greeks. And every independent nations that dares to challenge the might of Rome!' The expression on his face was that of a maniac. He just stared at Marcus, breathing heavily after his flaming speech. When he calmed down he started talking on his usual relaxed tone again. 'But we will see where fate will take us, I do however view you as a friend, Merula. And friends are easy allies.'

Well said Dives, well said. I too believe that Roma can be so much more, at the moment we act like the fox, only striking back when struck. But we must be the wolf! We must expand our ways to all corners of our world, so that every people may know the greatness of Roma! But, sadly, this is not the dream of many of the men in the Curia. They wish us to be pacifistic, and wait for another Phyrrus to come along and destroy us in our sleep. I even believe some Senators are Carthaginian sympathizers, but I will not name them here.
I think we should first secure our borders, by taking the lands of the Ligurii, then we may look across the adriatic to Illyria maybe? But Carthage MUST be dealt with at some stage...

"I believe that the Carthage should be given absolute priority! Having fought in many battles, I am sure that our soldiers are capable of any task! But, you are right Marcus, we must secure our borders. Our men are capable of fighting on the offensive, we must give them the chance and I'm quite sure that we will all be impressed. I have no future plans that I wish to discuss until after I have established myself on the Curia. I am quite tired and I believe that we should all get some sleep. Hopefully, politics won't damage our friendship, I bid you both farewell." Lucius falls into a drunken slumber and dreams about killing Carthaginians. He never liked Carthaginians.

Caius sniggers as he sees his old friend fall deep in sleep guided by his wine. Before Marcus can speak again he leaves the mansion.

An extremely agile looking youth appeared at the door steps of the Domus Postumii Albini holding a sealed scroll in his hand. The scroll bearing the emblem of the distinguished Triarius emblem of the twin headed serpent. The scroll reads as follows.

Greetings and warmest regards to the honorable senator Lucius Postumius Albinus, I senator Severus Ocatvius Triarius invite you to my humble abode for a lunch and perhaps engage in a delightful discussion, should you choose to except this, I will be serving the most exquisite wine from Narbo along with exported duck from North Italy and wild boar from southern France.
