Also, how come custom battle does not work?

Yes, you are supposed to start 50,000 in debt, but the Roman economy is very good and you should get out of the red in 8 turns, even less if you play your cards right.

I am supposing that you have the custom battles set to "late" period in which case you have to switch it to "all".
