No, actually. However, it makes sense, because CA (apparently) would come on here and tell everyone about the development for feedback. Same with Rome. No idea if it happened with Medieval, and definitely not Shogun. I doubt many of them cared about it after they started doing ETW.

The lead designer of Empire actually joked on his webpage (will try to dig up the link) about how he wouldn't even give his free copies away to his friends he was so embarrassed by the way it turned out. Exactly what people who just got ripped-off for $40 to $60 wanted to hear...
It's an interesting business model: Take a beloved franchise, turn it into a steaming (pun intended) pile of horse dung and then tell your hitherto fanatically loyal customers to gothemselves.
