    Default Eastern Infantry bugged?

I've been playing vanilla RTW for some time using Armenia, and I've noticed that the Eastern Infantry behave quite strangely in contrast to other infantry. They keep pressing forward, and when they swarm enemies from all directions, they go flying in the air like they're getting hit by elephants. This results in chaos on both sides. It's like they have uber mass or something.

I've already been looking in the .txt files to see if their mass has anything to do with it, but I couldn't find anything unusual. Has anyone else noticed this?

I haven't played RTW in a while but I remember they behaved the same in my campaigns ...

It's to represent their human wave attacks.

They're defensive militia infantry, minimally drilled to hold the line. I don't think they would be foolish enough to do such assaults.

EDIT: I did a test battle to see the behavior of them in a bridge battle. when I used a phalanx unit against them, the eastern inf were able to just steamroll right over them. This was not the case with any other infantry units from my experience. They did lose though, but it was just chaotic.

This is due to the little known fact that Eastern Infantry are in fact made of dark matter.

    Seems highly likely.

I guess this is one of those hidden mechanic/engine related things which no one can really explain?

I am not sure about the unit values, but I know that Eastern Infantry do have some uses. En masse, they function quite well.

I think that the value of Eastern Inf has been discussed to death already. I'm talking about the fact that they fly through the air when ganging up on an enemy. I just played a battle where I surrounded a legionary cohort with 7 units of Eastern Inf and it was just rediculous chaos.

Have a look at this vid:

Around 1.22 minutes, you'll see that the Eastern Inf start pressing the Barb Wb backwards for a few meters. They are equal in numbers, so it shouldn't be that way.

I'm surprised that I'm the first one noticing this.

    Normal mass+tight formation+ridiculously low defence.

The eastern infantry are based on the Persian sparabara, the shieldbearers. You'd be surprised to know how accurate they actually are. Except the pink pijamas, noone wore pink pijamas. They would've worn many colored pijamas.

So they would also employ infantry tactics whereby they relentlessly pressed themselves in the pikes of enemies, tripping over themselves in the process? I know that they're militia-grade soldiers, but they (or their general) wouldn't be that stupid.

I think that the Eastern Inf are pretty accurate in terms of equipment (bar their pyamas), but the thing that I'm talking about seems to be more of a bug then a feature or anything else. I haven't seen any other infantry unit behaving like this.

They did push themselves into the pikes, because they feared their masters more than their enemies.

Masters? Like they were slaves or something? I'm sorry, but this is simply not true.

Sparabara were made up of free farmers, much like the Saxon Fyrd, and the Greek Hoplites. They didn't do any suicidal human wave attacks, but were merely there to hold the line and defend archers.

I will have no debate on the use of human wave attacks from persian infantry. This thread is on what causes the Eastern Infantry to behave like this. I've been looking inside the Export_descr_unit.txt file for ages to see anything which might cause them to press themselves to the point of flying through the air. Because I really don't like this. It ruins my battle experience personally.

    Why does it ruin something?

And Persia had feudalism. Nobles ruled large estates, and the serfs worked the land. When there was war each noble brought woth him his retainers, fighting as cavalry, and serf conscripts, fighting as infantry.

Because I don't like to see my men flying through the air. And because I want a proper infantry battle, not some chaotic pool of assorted pyjamamen and legionairs.

Whatever the tactics of either the Achaemenids or the Parthians were, I don't think that any general would want to have this. I'd rather see my men performing poorly in battle and rout, then making a complete mess of the battle situation.

Infantry tactics = how well you handle your units in battle.
Flying infantry = either 101th Airborne or poor animations.
Choose for your self, but non the less, it is two different things..........

Eastern infantry are useful only as sucide ram-operators, since they're useless against anything other than peasants.
