Default The Triumph of Severus Vipsanius Magnus

Thousands of citizens had turned out to see their Consul, Severus Vipsanius Cincinnatus, now known as "Magnus" celebrate his triumph over the Gallic tribes. The I Victrix, the most famous legion of the Republic, chanted obscene songs about Severus as they entered the gates of the city. Their armor was polished to a splendid sheen so fine that one could hardly stand to look at them long in the strong midday sun. They wore plumes in their helmets and their banners were wonderfully adorned. Between the cohorts large carts filled with spoils passed. The wagons were overflowing with weapons of all sorts; swords, spears, shields, bows, javelins. Eventually the procession was continued byh a more pitiful scene.

The legionaries were followed by a procession of 500 Italian cavalry. Spears glinting in the sun, they cheered loudly and shook their shields. They were greeted enthusiastically by the crowd who welcomed them now as fellow citizens and brothers instead of only friends.

Thousands of captures Gauls, heads bowed and backs bent, some stripped nude, came into view. Their hands were bound and many wore neck shackles that burned wickedly into their flesh. The crowd met them with jeers, throwing rotten produce and insults at the humiliated men. Sitting atop a wagon in the middle of this shameful procession was the wretched figure of Catugantrix. He wore a filthy brown robe and his long hair shielded his face from the view of the crowd. His hands were tied behind his back.

The enslaved Allobroges were followed by more men of the I Victrix and finally the chariot of the Consul drew into view. Roars of praise and jubilation erupted from the crowd.

Standard bearers from all three legions under his command as well as the fasces of his high office accompanied him. A large crowd had formed behind the Consul as the procession made its way up the Via Sacra to the Curia. Severus wondered how the senate would receive him, this being the largest military victory in over a decade. There would be massive celebrations in the forum for days following the event.

Eventually all were gathered before the Temple of Saturn and on the steps of the Curia.

The Triumph culminated with prayers made by priests of various cults and eventually the appearance of all the senators on the steps. With the religious rites out of the way, it was time for the festivities to begin. As had already been arranged, mass distributions of food were held, items from Gaul were displayed and dancers, actors, and poets performed for the entertainment of the crowd. The Consul, wearing his full regalia, approached the senators and addressed them

"Noble Senators, today I have been honored first among all Romans for my services to the Republic. I will have you all know that I serve my country out of a sense of duty, and all honors that result are mere trappings. I thank you for this honor and ask you to join me in celebration!"

With that Severus stepped off his chariot and made his way over to massive tables set up in the streets , his, reserved for members of the Senatorial class only.

Quintus approached the Consul when he entered.

"An excellent Triumph Consul, most worthy of the glory you and the legions have brought to Rome. The plebs will be happy for days after the feast that certainly will erupt this day and the treasury will grow fat of the profit from all those Gallic slaves. I wonder though, do you know how is the situation among the other tribes in Gaul now? Since after seeing such a large tribe being defeated they must worry about their own fate."

    Hello Quintus, please join me!

Severus offered a seat to the senator and helped himself to more boar

What lies north of the Rhone is somewhat of a mystery to me. We hve had few dealings with them in the past. We spotted several of them scouting our positions and perhaps they even witnessed the battle. If they did all the better for us, they will fear our strength. Perhaps a matter for future debate, should we choose to establish diplomatic relations with them.

Quintus sat down beside the Consul.

"That is good, however I fear that after such a show of power the Gauls will seek to unite and become stronger to face the threat we pose to them., however if my Legion proposal is passed it will take away some of their boldness. I also doubt it would be wise to establish diplomatic relations with such barbarians since their lands would be prime to conquer in the future. However debates such as these we can have in the curia, now it is time to celebrate you victory against the Gauls Consul."

Quintus then poured himself a cup of wine and one for the Consul as well.

The future holds many uncertainties, for now I can't see the tribes wantign to fight anyone but themselves over regional troubles of their own. I'm sure they would attempt to unite when facing a common threat, much like the Greeks against Philip V. Have you read Polybius, Quintus?

"I am familiar with his work, however I must say that now seems to be an opportune moment for some gallic chieftain to gather the tribes. However there are certainly several chieftains in that position that will fight amongst themselves for quite some time:"

At least we must home so until the Governor of Spain informs us of whether or not his province is capable of fielding a legion. If it is not I may very well raise my own legion to defend Gaul!

The shadows from the temples grew long across the forum as the sun sank behind the horizon. Soon torches sprang up all around the forum illuminating it in flickering light.

"So the man has not replied yet? How neglectful of him, I think it would be an opportune moment to make young Spaniards into proper citizens. However I think it would be better to use the funds in the treasury since it is so healthy now rather than you having to spend your own money but I would certainly not mind another legion led by an accomplished commander as you being created in defence of Rome."

Eventually any non citizens recruited into a new legion will be citizens if they survive their tours of duty. Proconsuls are a peculiar thing, Quintus. I have already remarked to Artilius that perhaps Proconsuls are invested with too much power, perhaps it goes to their heads. Even I felt a bit awkward with the crown hovering above my head moments ago...

"It is quite a lot of power, however did you not have a slave whispering remember that you are mortal in your ear?"

    Quintus then smiled.

"Perhaps we should institute a similar system for our Proconsuls, having a slave following them around proclaiming their mortality at all times. Wouldn't that be a sight?"

Perhaps there would be less proconsular corruption if there was!

Severus snatched a passing poet and had him recite some lyrics as he poured more wine for himself and Quintus

Join Quintus and I, my friends. We were just discussing the merits of the Gallic barbarians before we were interrupted by a terrible recital of poetry...

Lucius hears that and looks at the Consul.

If you wish for entertainment, Consul...my daughter is well-versed in poetry and the lyre, thanks to my wife. Perhaps she provide this event with her talents.

Lucius nods and walks off for now. Lucius then returns with a young woman of 14 years. She remained in a reverent silence in the presence of such powerful men. Her father looked upon her.

Flavia...this is Severus Vipsanius Cincinnatus "Magnus," the great Consular of Rome. Consul, this is my daughter, Flavia Regulus.

Flavia would bow in respect towards the Consul and the others present.

It is a pleasure to meet you, Consul...and all of you, respected Senators of the Republic. My father has told me of your great achievement, Consul. It is an honor to meet you.

A servant brings in Flavia's lyre. Her mother, Valeria was nearby as well. It helped with their daughter's motivation with both parents present.

    A messenger arrives from Greece.

My greetings and congratulations to you, Consul Severus Vipsanius Cincinnatus, or should I say Magnus?

I regret that I cannot be present for your triumph, but I trust that it is suitably grand and the wine is plentiful.

    Signed,
Gaius Marius Aquila, Pro-Consul of Graecia

Consul Decimus grins as he arrives from watching the parade, taking his seat next to Severus. Nodding to the other Senators, he turns to Severus.

"Magnificent Severus, well deserved. Now then, where's the entertainment?"

He asks, before helping himself to a large portion of boar.

It is a pleasure to meet you, Flavia. It is good to see good Roman families aiding in the education of their children of all genders, not only the males. I've said for years now that girls should be taught poetical and musical arts, they seem well inclined towards them.

Severus had by now partaken of a lot of wine.

    Please, do begin.

Severus called for the table to silence.

And these as well, my friend. We found many of them along the rivers, never have I seen them so round and full...

Severus passed some large plums to Artilius

Perhaps I should try some in my own garden
