Mouse continually connecting and disconnecting from my system?

For the past few days my Microsoft mouse has been connecting and disconnecting from my Windows Business 34bit Sony Vaio laptop. I thought, as the wire was becoming detached at either end, that it was simply this which caused the unsteady connection. Therefore, I purchased a new Logitech M115.

The instructions say that it's a simple plug in and use mouse that requires no software. So, I plug in the mouse, expecting it to work now that I've ditched the Microsoft one. However, the same problem occurs. First, it made the sound that a USB device had entered the system and said that I need to install software to use the device. I was confused, but I clicked for it to install (with my touch pad mouse). After twenty seconds or so it disconnected then reconnected instantly. The problem being that every time it did this (constantly) it interrupted the apparent installation that was necessary for the product to work.

I looked on websites to get some solutions, but the help was no use: either complete mumbo-jumbo; or redundant help. I went to my device manager, power management, mouse properties: but they were no use.

So, in a last ditch effort, I did a system restore to a point where the problem was not occurring: two days ago. However, the same problem has occurred. I really can't understand what the problem could be, I haven't tampered with my system at all since the problem occurred and my mother's MP3 player connects to my USB ports perfectly (which I have also tried with my mouse).

I really hope there are some solutions to this, preferably inexpensive ones, too.

Just two quick questions. Do you ever completely shut down that system or just enter sleep mode when docked? What OS are you running on?

I shut it down at the end of every day, but usually otherwise leave it on sleep. I am using a Windows Vista Business 34bit Sony Vaio laptop. I have two outstanding 'important' Windows updates which won't install because of Code 66A (or something like that) and there's no cure for it. The system can't find the driver for my mouse and I can't find it on the internet, not even Logitech know of the driver needed for the mouse.

Reference this MS Support page. Have you ever run Windows Update on that system? What Service Pack are you on now? If you don't know you can look in your DxDiag log to find out. Those two outstanding updates are probably .Net Framework updates if not SP updates. Good luck!

EDIT: If you haven't upgraded to Vista SP2 then look here.

Sleep mode and Vista have been known to cause conflicts when waking up. This maybe one of them.

I've had the same problem with Microsoft Inteli mice and it can't be fixed so you will have to new one.

My Microsoft compact mouse had a loose connection: I've tested it. Whilst the Logitech (which I have since returned, for the time being) didn't have a loose connection but wouldn't install the driver (it can't simply just be the mouse, surely?).

As suggested by Doono try another USB socket to rule out a faulty port but what you've described its just what's happened to me several times before. I can only assume that one of the internal components wears out.

You tried a different USB port? You need to rule out the USB port isn't damaged first.

I have tried all three mice all in three different USB sockets as well as a USB hub I set up with four extended USB sockets. Microsoft one - broken until you put it in a particular position (no driver problem as it was installed more than a year ago). Logitech one - same problem as described. Other laser one - won't light up at all but is recognised as being there. I used my mum's MP3 player in all three USB sockets and it worked perfectly.

Here's a post I posted on Logitech website, who aren't helping much:

My touchpad mouse on my laptop is working perfectly and is the only one installed currently under: Synaptics PS/2 Port TouchPad and another USB Browser Mouse. I attempted using another laser guided USB mouse, but the same problem occured. The computer, however, recognised the hardware from when it was connected to when I manually took it out. The Logitech one kept connecting and disconnecting on its own accord. This, not only prompted me to believe the product was faulty, but also that there may have been a problem with my computer. The only problem would be that 2 Windows 'important' updates are not installed due to code 66A (or similar) of which there's no solution to. When Windows attempted to install the 'driver' for the mouse I had purchased, which, apparently there is no need for, it could not install it, presenting me the message I've posted.

I checked the things you have asked me to and everything seems to be clear. I do not want to uninstall my touchpad mouse because I know it wouldn't change anything, but thank you for suggesting. I really don't understand this problem as it's only recently come about. I figured (and found out after experimentation) that indeed, my old Microsoft mouse was disconnecting due to loose wiring. But, that does not give reason as to why my newly purchased Logitech mouse would be just as faulty by connecting and disconnecting on almost perfect intervals of 20 seconds of disconnect and instantly reconnect. This not only interrupted the 'installation' of the unfound driver, but also, the mouse wouldn't even work whilst plugged in, even with the laser beaming for 10 seconds, blinking for five and then beaming again.

Let's go back to the original problem. You tried a restore point when this error was not occurring and that did not help. That means to me that you had a working setup for a while at the very least. How long had that setup been working for you? You've checked all of your USB ports to make sure that they function with other devices - correct?

There must have been some change between the intermittent mouse failure and the current situation. Are you sure you haven't installed any new software or drivers recently? Also, are you sure you are totally up to date with Windows Vista? That MS page I referenced earlier should help you get to the last updates of Vista that MS will support.

As an aside - you switched from a Microsoft mouse to Logitech - correct? This did not solve the issue?

Lastly, please post your DXDiag log. It might help us to see what system you're running and what drivers are installed. Good luck!

Also, have you changed any of the hardware and/or drivers when this problem happened? I'd almost be willing to bet it's either driver conflicts (IRQ stuff) or maybe even your power supply. (Maybe just a wild guess.) I tend to reformat when things go wacky as a start, but this might be inconvenient for you.

Furthermore, the mouse continues to connect and disconnect which often comes up as 'interrupting' the download of driver software for the mouse (which Logitech deny there being any necessity or existence of!).

Disconnect the mouse and use the keyboard to download it.

I'm using a laptop. I'm using the touchpad mouse right now, but it's not as responsive in-game as a mouse. When I connect the mouse, it simply doesn't work, yet the laser shines and the computer recognises it. Furthermore, what do I download? Logitech says there's nothing to download.

Yeah, Microsoft says the same thing about drivers. What else around your laptop that could be breaking up the ir signal? Soda can? Dinner?
