Has anyone ever played a campaign in which Gaul actually is doing work? I'm on H/H and they are about to beat the Julii (sp?) Romans, about to take Macedon, and possibly more.

In my campaigns the gauls get gangbanbed by Brits, Germania, Spain and Julii

I have won campaigns as Gaul. When their economical situation begins to improve once you have taken over Iberia (my strategy, or at least the one I try to follow if the AI do not object too much) and some what passified the Julii (or destroyed Rome all toghther) you win hands down.
I once did a turtle campaign with Germania to re-enact the first world war, to be interrupted by huge stacks of Thracian armies.
Upon lifting the FoW i discovered they had taken approximately the same territories as the Soviet union combined with the Warsau pact. They had taken out Scythia, Dacia, Macedon, Greece, and Armenia and were in a deadlock with Egypt and winning. My mind was blown.
Seriously? What? I got to do this. I'm going to turtle as Germania too.

Only if I turtle as Julii. Most of the time they get trashed by the Britons and/or Julii. Sometimes Germania and Dacia lay into them as well.

Gauls get easily destroyed because their archers appear lately(when they are almost destroyed or never appear). The second thing is that in the game they can't put their soldiers up on the walls and they can't build stone walls.in history they have builded stone walls-Not so often as the Romans, but they did.
I've seen Gauls take most of Spain, Germany and expanding rapidly into the Balkans, but then in some 15 turns, Carthage and Julii whiped them out (well, they did lose their most eastern regions to me, playing as Seleucids, but that wasn't half as spectacular as the rest of their collapse)
I started a new campaign and this time Gaul didn't expand as rapidly, but was there still around in the year 249 or 246.
I once had a campaign as romans_scipii, where they just steamrolled germania, had taken Scythia and Spain and expanded into greece, at which point I noticed first. A few turns later, they just Steamrolled the Julii, while having conquered whole Greece.
It was incredible. At that point, it was a Superfaction - I didn“t stand a chance against them. Since I got a Message saying Gaul will be winning soon, I tried to defend the Senate. Was of no use though - After fighting like 30 of Full stacks, my armys where exterminated, and the Senate with them. After that, they actually took whole Italy, and then fullfied their victory conditions. First time for me ever to loose.
30 fullstacks and you LOST? Seriously, any roman army with a proper commander should be able to kill any Gaul army.

I didn“t even have a half Legion.Nor Marius Reforms. I was trying campaigning in east, carthage conquered, numidia conquered, egypt conquered, Seleucids destroyed.
I had 2-3 Units in my Capital and the Cities on Siciliy. A Half Legion was everything I could recruit in time - The most of the defending did the Senate, and I charged always in the flanks and rears of the gauls. Also, they had quite experienced units.
It was the Gauls who had 30 full stacks (at least). And as Scipii, with out your roman allies to trade with, and all those other nations destroyed by Gaul, I doubt his economy would/could be up for the task of re-forming an army capable of fighting 30 or more full stacks.
30 or more full-stacks of Gauls are surprisingly easy to defeat. For example, dont take the fight to them, fight them from towns and if you can, hire even one mercenary hoplite unit and you have basically won it. I refuse to believe that human will lose to AI Gaul.

He couldn't fight them from towns as he was trying to defend Rome, and I guess not everyone is as good as you Maiar![]()
