    Default Alliance & Diplomacy

I've played a few single-player campaigns on both RTW and the Barbarian Invasion expansion, and it seems to me that alliances don't really help much. They don't do much staving off attacks, as you get constantly betrayed, and they don't have much of an impact during war either, as I've yet to have allied reinforcements in a single battle.

So with that said, what is the point of an alliance anyways?

To have someone who won't attack you as long as your borders are well-guarded, or in some rare cases, an ally that will actually help you with your goals.

RTW diplomacy is pointless...And sooner or later you get in war with everybody.I mean everybody attacks you. They don't mind their victory conditions-for example:I played with Pontus once and in some I would say 18-20 turn Greek cities attacked me just because they had a city on Asia minor(Pergamum) I didn't attacked them first!.Their victory conditions are to outlive Thrace and Macedon+15 owned settelments...

Maybe they wanted those 15 settlements from you? Well, yeah, all TW diplomacies are wierd.. although from all factions, Greeks seem to accept peace treaties more than others.

The greek cites accept peace treaties because of there position. They go to war with the romans on turn 1 and then everyone else around a couple of turns later (Carthage, Thrace, Macedon, Pontus, SE and Egypt) Diplomacy is good for attacking a common enemy as the enemy's armies will be spread thin on two fronts instead of one.
