Marcus slumped in his chair, a long year was coming to an end and the events of the past year had given him a lot to think about. He sighed and opened a beautifully ornate drawer to produce a red book. The book of the Sergii streched back through to the founding of Rome, the combined memoirs of Marcus' family throughout generations. Opening the book, Marcus produced a fine metal pen and an inkwell and began to write the newest chapter.
"These are the memoirs of Marcus Sergius Lucanus, paterfamilias of the Sergii, senator of Rome and at writing quaestor, and the son of Decius Sergius Lucanus, who passed away just under two years ago, the year is 485 years after the founding of Rome."
Marcus smiled, best to get the details out of the way, lest the name of the Sergii fall out of memory.
"The year has already passed into history, after my election to the office of quaestor, I pushed through a series of construction works to aid the homeless in Capua and to improve the ports in Taras, the next decade should see the benefits of this work come to fruition.
We sentenced a traitor this year, Flavius Julius Corvenus. I was asked to stand on the tribunal of the patrician, who had been consul a few years ago. Corvenus had let his soldiers run rampage throughout the city of Syracuse and causing a conflict with the Carthaginians. Needless to say, he was convicted and sentenced to death by being thrown from the Tarpeian rock, but committed suicide before we could do so.
It appears I may have gained a few friends out of the conviction, Spurius Horatius Lurco, a patrician of great honour and integrity, has been suffering from illness over the past year, it may be a good idea to gain his support to advance my career.
I plan on standing for Praetor in the next year, hopefully by the next time I write in this journal, I hope to have served a term."
Marcus closed the book and placed his pen down, his servant poured out a cup of wine and placed it on the senator's table. Marcus picked up the drink and tasted it, live was sweet indeed.
