Does anybody know any tips or tricks to make the best out of a short campaign? I don't want to start a long campaign because it just takes too long. I want to get those late game units without conquering the whole world.

You would have to alter the Desrc_Buildings file in Data folder, to make the late game units available at a lower building level.
Normally, say "Town Watch" gives you town militia, then the next level adds spear militia, and so on until the end when you get the very last of your units. (likewise for every building type)
this would mean having to unpack the mtw2 data files. which is in of itself not too difficult...but unfortunately there is no 'late game' start as the original MTW had -- some of the mods out there might suit you instead of just vanilla.
The only way to do that is to turtle a while.
Well, I generally play short campaigns simply because it is (For some odd reason) the default set at my campaigns. I play to the very end, I don't care if I get the "Victory" message or not, I just ignore it and keep playing for the love of the game, I'd advise you to do the same.

I never said conquering the whole world. As far as I'm concerned, I can turtle my way to the year 1400, I really don't mind. Rarely in my campaigns do I conquer the whole world, my longest campaign in the past two years has been with Venice, reaching the year 1350 and holding only around 100 settlements. I may have even exaggerated that amount, I'm pretty sure it's less.

If you want to just fight battles with late game units just play custom battles.![]()
Short campaigns aren't necessarily shorter than long campaigns, it's kind of odd. The only difference between them is the victory conditions. For "long campaigns" you need to control so many settlements including some certain ones. This can be pretty easy to do, just attack anywhere you want at any time and take the number of settlements you need. Short campaigns require you to eliminate certain factions though, which may or may not be hard to do by hunting down every last family member or taking every one of a factions towns all over the place.
But also I support what Nazgul said. If you're just trying to win or whatever the campaign gets old quick (especially without mods) but if you kind of role play and put limits on your own expansion and have other goals it becomes a much more fulfilling experience.

Why not access the mighty console and apply a healthy sprinkling of 'create unit' to obtain the desired units?Saves time plonking about.
Nah, if the OP wants swift access to the desired units...create unit is the way to go
Anyway, when a regular campaign is virtually over, the console is like the icing on the cake!!Finish off whats left with a load of wacky units!!
Great fun.

With perhaps a teeny weeny reinforcement stack of 20 rocket elephants just in case.
