Default Enemy starts new siege on each turn [Possible BUG/GLITCH]

    Hello

I was hoping someone could help me.

Playing as England in my current campaign, the Portugeuse keep sending stacks to siege Caenarvon. The first time it happened, I negotiated a ceasefire on the same turn as the siege. The second time, I waited it out and fought a great defensive siege battle in a blizzard. Now they're back for a third time, but they don't actually attack.

Instead, with each passing turn I get the same message that I'm now at war with Portugal and they've broken their alliances with Spain. The stack that has Caenarvon under siege lifts it's siege and starts a new one between me clicking the button to go to the next turn and actually gaining control again, despite it having a ram, ladder and tower already built. I'm on the third turn of this now.

I can't find anything through a search, but I'm really hoping someone can help me rectify this. I love defending in sieges.

    I want another snowy bloodbath.

I'll sally if need be, but I'd prefer to make it as difficult as possible for them. The garrison is also built for defense, given Portugal's tenacity over this one city.

Yeah. Looks like they're intent on being annoying rather than being serious about their warring.

Just gone onto the fourth turn of this. I took a screenshot of the message I've now had four times.

Maybe Spain keeps making an alliance with Portugal every turn. this makes it so you are at peace with them, and they raise the siege. then, Portugal attacks you again, breaking the alliance with Spain and starting a new siege.

i think the game just loses the plot everynow and then, twwolfe has probably got it sussed but it would be hard to know!! i would think it would be sorted in a few turns or you may just have to attack it, or move the army back to portugal! i had a situation where i was venice and a jihad was called on naples, i was at peace with the turks but at war with the byzzies. a turkish stack come through my lands and finished a turn just north of zara, then a byzzie diplomat come along and persuaded them to go to war with me!! i let the turks stack sit there for a few turns, thinking it would carry on to its jihad target, but it didn't move at all, so i sent a garrison out to kill them!!

It happens occasionally. Sometimes the AI also attacks and then breaks the seige as soon as it can. My normal work around is to reduce the garrison to a minimal level (Get's a little hairy when they do attack occasionally) so the AI thinks it's numbers will win and attacks. You normally encounter this when defending from Jihads and Crusades, were the army will be the last one left and the Auto-calc shows it's going to lose.

    Thanks for all the replies.

It seems to be sorted now, and I have an idea why.

A couple of turns after the first of these failed sieges, I got a mission from my council to blockade Pamplona for two turns. I moved a fleet of three Holks there and blockaded it. I also blockaded Lisbon with a three Cog fleet returning from dropping off an expedition party in Algeria, heading for Timbuktu.

What I hadn't realised when I last posted was that I couldn't blockade Portugal either, but I could blockade other factions. It was like my progress with Portugal was being reset with each passing turn. I took smthhappy's advice and sallied forth, though I didn't know the composition of the whole Portuguese stack. Our stacks had an equal number of units (a 5-star general commanding 11 units) and I outnumbered them by about 300 men, but the odds were in their favour, especially by sallying as they had a load of heavy cavalry.

Anyway, I won the battle, and seeing as that was the last thing to do before going to the next turn I quickly saved and proceeded, keeping my eye on Pamplona's blockade. I got to the next turn and the blockade was still there, as was Lisbon's. I need to do some assassinating until I'm ready to go to the next turn, so I'll post back, whether or not the blockade mission succeeds.

So, I'm thinking that this was caused by both myself and Portugal being allied with Spain. By attacking me, Portugal attacked an ally of their ally, so broke their alliance with Spain and started some weird loop. I'll go back to an earlier save and remove the Fog Of War to see what the Portuguese and Spanish Diplomats are up to.

I'm still annoyed though. Portugal was following a cycle of landing at Caernarvon on one turn, sieging it the next and then attacking on the third. They would have attacked in winter again if they'd stuck to that cycle, so I could have got more beautiful screenshots.

I'll try that at some point, though I'm probably using up my exploit karma with merchant forts.

    EDIT

Looks like it was caused by Portugal and Spain allying with each other every turn. A spanish diplomat has been outside Pamplona for atleast four turns, and they've just become allies again, ending Portugal's assaults. If they attack me again, I'll end my alliance with Spain.
