Default Villa of Aulus Ovidius Priscus

A very spartan home, with little in the way of decoration. A simple garden surrounds it and high walls lend the interior a calming silence.

Priscus, having been informed of the arrival of Caesar, went outside to the courtyard to greet him personally.

"Consul Caesar," Priscus said with a slight bow," it is an honour. What brings you to my domicile?

    Caesar smiled.

"I had heard from my dear friends in Rome that you were running for Quaestor! I make it a habit to get to know all Senators who begin their rise on the cursis honorum. Tell me, Senator, what are your views politically? I do not mean to sound abrupt but like I said,"

    He flashed a flawless grin.

"I like to get to know my colleagues."

Priscus knew just as little about Caesar's actual policies, what a man does in the Curia is rarely a reflection of how the man truly feels.

"My policies," replied Priscus with a note of sarcasm," are whatever is best for the people."

He sat down at a small nearby table and two servants brought over a pitcher of water and two clay cups, he gestured for Caesar to take the seat opposite him.

"I am a simple man but I am not devoid of ambition," he paused for a moment and poured some water into both cups," I will act as is best for the Republic... and for myself."

"I would say that a man can never have too many friends," Priscus gently dodged the statement," however if you want my backing, I need to know that I have yours."

Priscus took a swig from his cup and let Caesar consider his response, no need for haste.

"In my new position as Quaestor I have become aware of how dangerously unstable the Republic's treasury is, something which must be rectified."

Upon returning from the Senate Aulus immediately made ready to travel to Hispania, not wanting to waste further time debating the issue. He had already gathered most of his belongings together when he was struck by the sudden urge to bathe, one last time, before travelling across the length of the Republic. So it was that when Quintus arrived, he found Aulus relaxing in the impluvlum in the atrium.

There was a brief moment of discomfort before Aulus decided to just get it over with.

"Do you not trust the safety of Rome Senator?" asked Aulus, looking significantly at the two lictors.

"I am not really fond of them either but they come with the office and it would be quite bad manners to travel without them."

Aulus could understand his logic, he rarely travelled into the city however.

"Forgive my state of undress, I just felt like enjoying one last taste of Rome before I depart. Travelling rarely afford one time for luxury."

He pulled himself out of the water and grabbed a nearby towel, wrapping it around himself he walked over to a small table, inviting Quintus to sit opposite him.

"What brings you to my tranquil abode?"

    Quintus sat down.

"It is concerning the elections, the position as Consul to be precise. I believe that we need change after having the same Consuls for two years and to be honest I think it is rather dangerous to have people with that kinda power in their positions for to long and even though we have had some differences concerning the budged in the Senate I would like to count on your support."

Aulus has heard some rumblings to that effect already, which had left a great deal to the imagination. Seeing it before him now it seemed reasonable and affable but in this matter all things should be done with caution.

"Severus would do well as a Praetorian, especially if the Senate's latest flight of Thracian fancy backfires. We need his skills at the Senates disposal not stymied by his honour and loyalty, I don't see many other alternatives before us."

He let that statement hang there for a moment and considered his position. He had the opportunity to begin his own campaign sitting before him, why not take it?

"If however you wish to court my vote, I need to know with whom else have you conferred or are intending to confer. I assume that I am not the only target of your intentions?"

"I'll have to talk to Severus when I return for Hispania, so much will depend on getting the right people in the right places."

Aulus poured some water from a pitcher on the table, it was pleasantly cool if a bit crunchier than he expected.

"At some point I need to find a way to eliminate the pests that infest this city. Given that I do not know who else will be running, I cannot guarantee you my support and if you're already courting so many others I do not wish to present you with a condition that could cause conflict for you further on down the road."

Aulus took another drink from his cup, emptying it. He needed a position to affect change but not one that would otherwise disrupt the balance the Senate had somehow precariously achieved, between those active and those who were just abusing their roles for some extra coin, sadly now was not the time to do it.

"Is there anything else you wanted Senator?"

Aulus bowed his head slightly as Quintus rose, a mark of respect.

"Quintus," Aulus said to the senators retreating back," if Severus runs for the position again, you'll have my vote. May the Gods be with you, you'll need their protection more here."

And with that he rose and strolled towards his bed chambers.

Lucius arrives upon his horse, followed by his son Caelinus. He walks up to the villa and asks if Senator Aulus is available.
