Icon5 Defensive towers controlled from the other side of the settlement.

    Hello

    I've been doing alot of sieging in my current campaign, and I've noticed on a number of occasions that a settlement's defensive towers can be active and firing at me even though the closest enemy unit is on (literally) the other side of the settlement.

    Is this meant to happen, or is it some sort of glitch? Its really annoying. I work to push enemy troops away from the walls then get a random tower activating behind me.

    It's probably just something the AI can do, just to make things a little trickier.

    Maybe a screenshot would help.

    This is the situation that made me decide to start this thread. I had it paused while I typed the original post.

    It isn't the worst case of ghost-occupied towers that I've seen, but it highlights my point.

    Notice the occupied tower on the left side of the screen. Then notice the closest unit to it on the right side of the screen. That tower is on the southwest corner of the west wall of a castle (Caernarvon), and the closest unit is at the centre of the south wall.

    Earlier in the battle there was a tower in the centre of the east wall that was active, but the closest unit to it was on the south wall. I checked for stragglers in both cases, in case there was a single guy anywhere near the towers.

    but is it the next closest tower to the unit on the wall?

    e.g tower,unit,tower

    Yeah that's normal, because it's the closest tower.

    So if they have something like

    [+]==================================(units)==[+]

    The tower on the left will still be active, because it's the closest tower to an occupied segment of a wall. Also, it doesn't matter if the wall is bending. For example:

    //==================================(units)==[+]

    [+]

    The tower on the lower left will likewise be active.

    So a unit on a wall controls the tower either side of where it currently is, but a unit on the ground only controls a tower if it is in the tower's control area?

    No, I think a unit on the ground does the same thing as if it were on the wall long as it has proximity to that wall segment. So it wouldn't make a difference if it were like this

    Code:
    //====================================[+]
    ||                               (units)

    [+]
    The unit above would still activate the tower at the lower left.

    Oh. Well slap my knee and call me Betsy! I had no idea about this. Thanks for clearing it up for me. Should be less irritation in sieges now.

    no, it would have to be on the wall to be able to activate the tower each side. if the unit is on the ground, then it has to be really close to the tower for the tower to activate

    For large town, there are part of the rempart that don't behave as would bigger town or castle, you can activate the tower by being further away. Your pic might be one of those 2 possibilities:

    I think Caernarvon was a Motte & Bailey when I took it, though your screenshots are interesting. Don't the gate towers activate as one? I can't remember seeing only one of the two towers active.
