Black Screen causing a crash

Has anyone ever had their screen go black after they have clicked to end the turn. It then errors and shuts the game down. When I go to load the saved game either the autosave or the name for the file I have created, it crashes again when I end the turn. Worried because now my campaign might be done. Have to start over.

What was the error it told you?

Just that RTW encountered an error and was shutting down.

Start a new game

See if starting a new game solves the problem if it does not then let us know and we will go deeper into troubleshooting your problem

You should disable autosaves in the preferences.txt and also not use the Quicksave ability. These are known to corrupt the saves.

Not sure if this causes problems, but I do recruit generals for governors, could I have problems with duplicate names causing the game to crash. I will disable the autosave. I have a new game going, will disable it.

No, these are two separate issues. Recruiting generals for governors is perfectly fine. In 1.6, you could specifically recruit Governors but in 2.x, that was removed because it takes up a unit slot, so in 2.x all you can do is recruit Generals to act as Governors or Generals or obviously wait for family members.

The duplicate names will occur if you do not enable the script. You should always enable the script when starting or loading a campaign.

Autosave is just a known issue, it can cause corrupt saves and it can cause CTD's but it doesn't happen for everyone and it doesn't happen consistently. It is a problem with the engine not the mod.

look in preferences.txt, there should be one in each play_faction folder if you've played that faction. Look for auto_save:true and change it to auto_save:false

My understanding of the problem with Autosave/Quicksave is from a conversation with dvk901. Apparently, both use the same bit of code to do the save. If the save fails for whatever reason it corrupts that save and if you are only using Autosave/Quicksave you don't have any saves so the campaign is lost.

It's best avoided.

Personally, ever since I read that advice years ago I've been dong manul saves and at times before and after each battle especially if there are multiple battle in a turn.

R:TW is an old engine and many mods are pushing what it'ca capable of. Many people overestimate how good thier PC is and tend to push what they can really use. Remember the game is from 2004/2005 so multiple cores and many things that can be done on modern graphics cards could not be dreamed of then.
