Default Computer starts up with black screen.

After doing an automatic log in, my computer comes to a black screen with a cursor. I am able to use taskmanager (that is how I am on firefox right now) but I can't start explorer. It says it can't be found. Most places say its a virus and you simply need to delete something out of image blah blah in the registory. Well, my registery doesn't have the same stuff as the suggested fix. I assume that this isn't a virus and is somehow a messup somewhere that made windows delete the explorer? I remember when I first started up my computer, before the windows logo, it said deleting file: blah blah and something %. It did this for a lot of files. I have even tried system restoring but that doesn't help, any clue what the problem is?

Yep, on D-Day in Iraq, we launched over 500,000 pikemen to capture the flag which Rome was holding. Didn't go so well for us but those Spartans didn't win by much with there muskets.

Are you running AVG with a startup scan?

Then what program was deleting the files and what files were deleted? Does this program have a log of its mschieviousness?

Yes I can go into safe mode, but it doesnt change much. Windows was the one that deleted the files and I have no clue what files that includes. The screen that deleted the files looked like the one when u press f8.

Have you tried running windows Update manually and installing all software options? Your answer maybe in there.

How would I update it manually without a start button?

Can you try something like this? How to update Windows manually. You will have to use Internet Explorer for it to work. Good luck!

EDIT: Two things - Windows Explorer is probably what was deleted and you could still have IE on that system.
Lastly - do you have any recovery discs?

Irish you were right! I finally found a way to bring up my control panel and installed a bunch of updates and now everything is back to the way it was!

+ Rep to everyone who replied and tried to assist.

Uhh, much bigger problem now. Whenever I attempt to click on one of my music songs or pictures it says that the file cannot be found.

First off - install some kind of Anti-Virus software on that system. Running without just invites trouble. Here's Microsofts basic MSE. At the very least use that.

If those files can't be found then you may have larger issues. They may have been deleted by the virus you claimed you had before.

How are you trying to access those files? For music or video? What software? Or are you just relying on the Windows Explorer to open them for you?

You have some deep problems related to your machine at the moment. Install some kind of AV and run a full scan. Lastly - I hope you have backups for those files. Good luck!

I am simply trying to open a file by clicking on it. They are clearly there and are clearly on my HD.

Registry is corrupted, then. Probably got done when windows was cleaning house.

The only choices I see are (1)reinstall all of them, (2)hope a restorepoint still exists with them in it, or (3) learn how to use regedit of which I do not recommend.

Windows wouldnt let me restore for some reason because of the C drive. I honestly dont want to have to burn all of this music on here again either. Any other options of fixing a registery?

Not really without a Registry backup. You're proabably going to have to burn that music again.

Eusing Free has a Reg Backup and it's easy to use. Install it for future sake.

    Try this one out:
    Free Window Registry Repair
Otherwise use Windows Repair (Requires Disc) to fix you registry.

No. Regedit is the manual way. A good way to be reinstalling windows and reinstalling your music, anyway.

I might play around in the registry with Medieval2 and mods but I'll back it up first. Anything else reinstall time.
