new graphics card , same problem

I just replaced my gigabyte 5670 with the sapphire version of the 5670, only to get the same error. I original returned my gigabyte version because I thought it defective. I kept getting blue screen errors with stop messages. I tried updating and removing drives, but it didn't work. You can read more about it here:

Anyway , the sapphire version is doing the very same thing. I used drive cleaner before installing the driver. Is my computer to old to run these cards or could it possibly be a drive issue?

my specs are:
Windows Xp 32 bit Service pack 3
Pentium 4 Processor
3 g ram
500 w PSU 12VR=18 A
226 g HD -53.3 gigs free
PCI-E
Mobo: ASUSteK

My BIOS is up to date.

I got about three weeks to resolve the issue, or it's another RMA for me. Have no idea what the problem could be. I'm going to try and clean the PCI-E slot tomorrow with an air can, but I doubt that will work. Any suggestions?

Oh, how I miss my burnt out 7600gt. Not the best card on the market, but at least it worked for about 3 years.

Could be a mobo issue as well. Have you tried reinstalling windows?

I'm sorry to find out about this glitch, especially after my glowing recommendations for the 5670.

Unfortunately, what you've described in the other thread looks very similar to the problems I had when I first tried a dedicated GPU. It was a Radeon 4xxx on the first PC I had. Despite it working perfectly to begin with, after a few hours it started to give me BSoDs, eventually making the PC unusable..

It turned out that my motherboard wasn't good enough for the card, so I had remove it, instantly curing the problem.

It could, hopefully, be a simple fix, updating or reconfiguring something.

no, I haven't. That's a bit extreme, no? I'd lose a lot of other files, and the amount of time to start from scratch again.

Is there a way to check if my mobo is compatiable? This might be worth looking into.
I have a few other things I want to try:

1. I noticed that anytime I use avast anti-virus' boottime scan, I will get a one of these errors? could this possibly be a antivirus driver conflict? It unlikely, but many people have said to turn off AV when installing drivers.

2. Can someone recommend another drive cleaner? I'm using drivecleaner pro, and I wonder if it's catching everything. Do I have to use this for every account on my comp, or one just good enough?

I google the problem I'm having, and I see I am not alone. There just seems to be different solutions, and I'm not sure if all are applicable. Does anyone know how to access those dump files my comp creates on BSOD? is there a specific program I have to use in order to read
them?
Where would old drivers be located? I want to look the up manually

I have another issue too. When I first tried to install catalyst, and was prompted to restart, I got a BSOD. Now, I can't seem to install or uninstall catalyst. I have tried reinstalling, but it never shows up. Not sure what's going on.

I can't remember - does XP have Event Viewer? Check Admin tools and look for it. If there it may give you a hint as to why the BSOD's are happening.

according to the hp help center it says to:

To display the WIN32_EXIT_CODE error that SCM encountered, at the command prompt, type
sc query service name
The information displayed can help you troubleshoot possible causes for the error.

Not sure what to do from here.

From the "Start" button choose the command prompt ("Run") and type in the following: sc query WIN32_EXIT_CODE

I should type cmd first, then type in the cmd.exe: "sc query WIN32_EXIT_CODE" (without the quotes), right? I got this :

Not sure, what do you guys think? I seem to get a variety of errors, but this "0x0000007E" is the most frequent. Do you think I should install these omega drivers? And I still can't figure on what's going on with catalyst, it won't appear. I think when I was using drive cleaner, I may have cleaner the ati uninstall software.

Correct. That error message looks to mean that the device is not initializing properly and is causing your problems. It won't start properly and when stressed BSOD's out. Now you could try looking for an ATI driver that is a bit older but my hope for this working is low. But nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I'm thinking along the lines of Elysium now. It may be that your mobo is just too old to handle that card. I did a little searching and it seems that changes were made between PCI-E 2.0 and 2.1 that makes backwards compatibility difficult. As far as I understand you only have a PCI-E 1.0 slot on that mobo - correct?

It may be time to look into upgrading your entire system - or at the least replacing the mobo to something newer (the less expensive method).

yeah, it most likely is. I can't think of anything else to add. If I can't find a solution, then I'm just going to return the card. I'll have to wait awhile before I buy a new comp. I just don't get why the card would work at all if there is some kind of conflict with the mobo. Sucks. Looks like it back to console gaming for me. Thanks for your help

Cards are backwards compilable to a certain extent. The problem is the mobo - unless you can find a firmware flash for your mobo then it is unlikely you'll get that GPU to work satisfactorily with your motherboard. I know that mobo is old by any standard but there may be something on the makers website that can correct the problem. The question I have is what mobo and system do you really have? Drop your DX log on us and maybe we can say yea or nay. Good luck!

Cuz if its a dying harddrive whos size is shrinking as bad clusters are marked and blocked, it could be your problem.

my computer is about 5-6 years old. I never detected a problem with the HDD, but who knows.

Considering that you have a Pentium 4 as CPU it means that your MOBO is pretty old, this might be the problem.

Also I don't think that pairing that CPU with a 5670 is good, your CPU might bottleneck your overall performance.

A 9800gt 1 GB card would work with that system but I don't know where you'd find one new. E-Bay is an option.

Everytime I get an essential upgrade that relies on drivers to properly function I ALWAYS reformat Windows, I reformat about 4 times a year.

I suggest reformatting. What I suggest doing is maybe buying a 1TB secondary drive and keeping all your essentials files on there (Pictures, Movies, Music) and keeping your main drive for games, etc.

I bet the reformat will fix the problem 100%.

Also... If you haven't reformated in 6 years.... oh god.

The last time I reformatted was about 5-6 months ago when my 7600 gt died. I didn't realize at the time that it is was the card , but I reinstalled windows. Not sure if it got all the drivers though. I notice that quite a few files from my old account were left over. Maybe i'll look into this

I know all these blue screens can't be good for my comp, but do you think it is doing serious damage? I'm just curious.

Edit: I Think I have recovery cds, not the xp installation. I guess I did recovery 5-6 months ago.

Check to be sure HP has Win 7 drivers for your computer first. I have had a few on this site have to roll back to the old OS because their computer was not supported for Win 7.

I'm sorry, I don't follow. I'm not too techy, why should I check for win 7 drives? I'm using xp. Wouldn't win 7 drivers be incompatible with my comp? I'm not sure if these recovery cds are the same as reformatting.
