    Default Small Pacifist Faction?

Hello, Ive been playing SS6.4 for some time (Early Era, Savage AI) and I was wondering which faction would you recomend me to play if I try to make a peaceful campaing for the first turns and after developing a bit, be able to start some warfare but without pissing off the Pope.

My idea is to Autoresolve battles in order not to have the battle advantage against the AI.

I played with the Danes, but it became a race against Norway, and even though I could take the revel settlments north, Norway ends up attacking in early turns, something nearly impossible to stop since, first years I dont have castles or any good military forces compared to them.

    Any suggestion?

Sorry, I couldn't resist based on the thread title!

In all seriousness, though, what about Scotland or England? Make peace with your neighbor on Britain, stay out of the mainland, and just sit tight. You're going to piss off the Pope, probably, but you might be able to build up a powerful navy and use that to do naval invasions against only excommunicated Catholic nations or Pagans and Muslims.

Probabbly i didnt explain myself the best way. What i meant was that i would like to play a faction with no much possibilities of expanding in the first part of the game. That needs to develop first (allowing AI to develop and expand) before it can launch a serious attack against anyone, but during this develpment period is not an easy target for the AI.

I look for this in order not to rush conquerin rebel settlements to mantain my economy throght expansion, but develop my faction, and when the time cames face the AI developed also.

I'm currently experimenting with Sicily, which only has 2 rebel settlements nearby reachable by land, it has the opportunity to develop economy before military side first, and somehow under the shelter of the papacy, only exposed to the moors by sea (they just declared war by a port blockade in turn 9, i didnt conquer any part of africa, and im planning to offer a ceasfire).

england or the scots are a good choice, cause if you want to expand early you can do it into Ireland. However of course the british Isels are relatively safe choice... but beware of those crazy Castillans... they often try to jump up and seize exeter

i would suggest venice, from my personal experiences i find tht the pope usually doesnt excom you if you attack genoa, its very fun to by turn 30 have two vassals(sicily, genoa)

    I agree with TheBard.
Choose England or Scotland, make peace with your neighbour and develop. Not much to expand to, only York (unless you go for Ireland.)

Play with the pope himself, guaranteed peaceful start with no body attackking you and no angering the pope, and when you want to expand, you can always take on the muslims.

Or you could play Novgorod. They are reasonably remote and have plenty of rebel territory to their east that you can expand into. As long as you don't go west or too far south you should be able to avoid conflict for a while.

I'd have to agree here. Anyone who attacks you is instantly excommed, and I think if you attack anyone it happens to them too. Just take over the rebel settlement to your NE, (Ancona I think), and sit back and develop. Rome is a bit developed already, but I don't think anyone besides a possible naval invasion by Muslims is gonna bother you for quite some time.
