Default Difference in battle performance vanilla <> SS

    Hi,

Yesterday night, just for the hack of it, I decided to play a vanilla campaign, after several months of SS'ing. What I noticed is that with the same unit size, and all detail switched to the lowest (e.g. grass off, etc) the vanilla battle ran much smoother than what I'm used to in SS. Is this normal?

    cheers,

I believe it is normal. SS unit models and textures are a lot more detailed than vanilla M2. Naturally, it takes a lot more from your pc, not to mention the fact that newer computers usually have multi-core processors, which M2TW engine is not made to use. Besides the visual part, there are a lot more scripts in SS than in vanilla and i believe that AI could be slowing the game down aswell, thgough i'm really not sure to what extent.

Yeah I expected the unit models/textures had something to do with it. The scripts run on the campaign map though, so shouldn't impact the battles?

SS has battle scripts running too as part of the battle AI.

Did not know that - guess that explains more than half of my question ... thanks!

SS uses custom AI in battle i believe and that what i really meant. But as i said, i dont know how much it really influences the performance.

AI Scripts don't influence the number of FPS in battles, tested with FRAPS a few months ago. And I have a pretty low-end PC, so it seems credible.

    Regards

Edit: I meant current AI scripts, unskilled scripting could lead to FPS drop in extreme cases.

I've had bad battle FPS in 6.4 too ever since I installed it. Am yet to find the cause of it.

Kick the graphics settings out of the default.cfg and set it to what you are normally using and compare.

Is there a difference between this and setting them in-game? If so, how do I 'kick out' the graphics settings?

Put a semi-colon (;) in front of each line under the [video] section of default.cfg.

Hmmm...that seems to have helped with my issue.

Settings in the cfg can go higher than the ones ingame. Depending on which they can be set with greater precision as well.

Hi, while on the subject of different performances.
Could anybody tell me why SS graphics runs and looks smoother than say DLV?
I was advised to change the settings on the DLV model_db file to 6400 to all meshes. And although this made DLV better, it still created blockie type units on screen and still isint as smooth as SS.
So am I to think SS is using a different type of skinning design to the other mods, or is it a magical graphics program setting or file I can run or replace on other mods?
Also would changing the model_db file to 6400 make SS graphics even better

Well, tested this (sort of) yesterday evening and it does seem to improve performance 'kicking out' the cfg settings. Haven't played any performance killing battles (sieges with full stacks), but a few larger battles went smoother, is my impression ...

Under the [video] section is also the setting for alt-tabbing out of the game, can i leave that on safely?

I'd leave that one on unless it really becomes necessary. Actually would rather turn down something else before I'd touch that one. It is just more comfortable and easier on you to freely alt-tab in and out of the game without the "alt-tab-reload" that wastes your time.
