I'm wondering how easy or hard it would be to port a forum running an earlier version of phpbb over to say sms or something else.
Edit: maybe this should go in the basement?

Most forums have an import tool to import from other versions. I assume you meant smf forum and not sms?

oh right, so any recommendations on hosts?
Dreamhost and Hostgator aren't bad. Zymic is free.

I heard bad things about dreamhost some years back so I went with bluehost which was ok, nothing spectacular and they were similar to dreamhost, in fact not sure if they might have been the same company at one point, maybe I'm way off on that.
Not to my knowledge, Dreamhost's a little indie company. I haven't had any complaints with them, they're better than the other load of free hosts I've tried. They're very communicative and really pack a small business feel.

I always wanted to try a server from rack space just for the 'fanatical support' lol
Then you're talking expenses. Physical hardware, even if you're just renting == shell out the $$$$

You can get off pretty cheap on this as well, depending what your needs are. Find a used 1U machine, I found a list posted today on Craigslist.

Machine #8 is a dual/dual AMD (4 processors) with 8 gigs of RAM for $150. Thats not bad at all for getting into server hardware. Find a good colocation host and you can get in pretty cheap as well. The TWC host is $25 per month per each U of rackspace, and they will throw in 1mbps bandwidth. Thats in the neighborhood of 250 gigs of bidirectional transfer.
If you are looking at hosting a website similar to TWC, that machine will handle quite a bit. Thats bigger than loki was, and we used that server for something like 3 years until we outgrew it.
Damn I wish I lived out there. A server like that on Craigslist where I live would run me up ~$1000, I guess because most of the server farms are out west or something. And the only colocation center near me was ~$100/mo minimum the last time I checked. (Which was a few months ago.)

yeah dedicated server, that would actually not be good for this board, games on the otherhand![]()
That's pretty cheap and a lot more cost effective than things used to be 10 years ago lol...
I think as more and more places go fiber that bandwidth costs will keep coming down. The real problem is that as they come down, file sizes also get larger so there is no real savings. Just look at games, now they are in the neighborhood of 20 gigs in size. All the media files and podcasts and everything else the world uses today use a lot more bandwidth, so any savings in bandwidth per mbps are eaten up by the number and size of files.
If you want me to pick you something up let me know, and I can ship it to you or install it here someplace.

I might consider that too! and working for a cable ISP I know exactly what you're talking about regarding bandwidth. There's going to be a lot of new things coming down "the pipe" (no pun) ...the days of net neutrality are pretty much ending.
