    Default Crusade and deserting units

So I marched an army on crusade to the target region containing Cairo. The next turn, a pop up tells me my soldiers are leaving me cuz I'm not doing my job? Is something wrong with SS 6.4's crusade scripts, or something?

My full stack became like 1/4 of a remaining stack, and I had to give up my crusade, even though I was a mere two square tile things away from the target city...

Yeah, I'd say there is something amiss.
Playing as Fatimid's, I declared jihad on a neighbouring province--NEIGHBOURING--and I had three elite units desert before I reached their city walls...

I think it may depend on what you do when you get close. I have noticed this problem happening when you arrive at the target region, but it is already besieged by another kingdom and you cannot join in. I also had it happen once when I sent a small unit from the Crusading army home to retrain. I got the message as if the whole Crusading army was about to desert, but in reality, it was just about that one small unit.

This was my experience as well. The target city was besieged by others and at the end of my turn I was not directly adjacent to the city. Next turn I moved adjacent to the city and for for each turn thereafter, while I waited for the other jihad army to succeed/fail, no desertions occured.

At least we also now know that it is part of the original game code

If you don't move closer to the Crusade target each turn and fit your army in the open space near the city your army will desert. So sometimes so many other armies are around the target you can't fit in close enough but that is pretty rare or requires something like Granada where only 2-3 armies can fit near enough.

I figure they just desert to go back home. Which doesnt seem that safe really.

"Well, we've been at war with the Egyptians for 40 turns, weve executed almost all their cities, and Ireland is over 9000 miles away...screw the army, im walking home"
