I'm freaking pumped. This looks like it could be Glory, but at 20,000 feet against Germans.
Cuba Gooding Jr.? Check.
Bryan Cranston? Check.
Me262s? Check.
George Lucas wrote it (but isn't directing or doing the screenplay!). Check.
For those non-Americans who aren't aware of their claim to fame, The Tuskegee Airmen was a fighter group composed entirely of African-Americans who served in the USAAF throughout WWII.
Because of segregationist attitudes at the time it wasn't believed that Blacks could be as proficient as Whites in operating advanced hardware, in fact it was nearly impossible for a Black man to even get a pilots license in the country, so the Tuskegee Airmen were treated badly right off the bat, and the program that allowed for their training as a testbed for future integration was nearly canceled.
The pilots who made it through the training (which the Air Force made incredibly slanted) were not treated fairly at all during the war, but managed to excel despite it. IIRC by war's end they had the best record for escorting bombers out of every other flying unit, with some bomber squadrons specifically asking to be covered by the "red-tailed angels" as they were called. Their performance proved to be a major factor that led to President Truman's order to integrate the US military in 1948, and of the survivors still alive today they often get places of honor at any aviation events they attend. These guys were real heroes.
