    Default Virus?

Hey all, a few days ago I got a popup from google chrome saying that my computer had been infected with a virus and I should exit to avoid the system becoming unstable (something along those lines). I performed a quick scan with Kaspersky and it didn't find anything, so I decided I'd leave it for now. Today though, google chrome again came up with a popup, this time saying my computer was infected with a virus and it needs removing, click okay to scan immediately. It then took me to a new page where it scanned (I don't know how) and it came up with a variety of different things. Me being very distrustful of what is, basically, not an anti-virus programme, I immediately closed google chrome.

I'm now doing a full scan on Kaspersky as I'm quite worried, but it has not yet found anything (after about 10% done). If it does not find anything even when it's finished, what should I think?

    Thanks, ATWP

I haven't used the chrome browser for all that long, but I'll attempt to help you as much as possible.

To be honest, I doubt that your web browser would tell you that you have a virus, as they don't actually have that ability (after all, that's what your dedicated anti-virus software, in your case Kaspersky, does). I can't help but think that that pop-up is not an alert from the chrome program itself, and thus is trying to get you to download something that could be potentially bad.

Also, how were the pop-ups different? And while you don't actually have to tell me, consider what you've downloaded and what sites you've visited recently. They could be the cause of this.

All I can really suggest is that you let Kaspersky do a full scan. Maybe use a different web browser (Internet Explorer should be installed by default) and see if the same thing comes up. That could possibly shed some light into it.

Scam site. You've been going to places you probably shouldn't. I don't know Chrome at all but is there a way to keep pop-ups/scripts from executing? I predict future virus problems in your future. Link to Malwarebytes for future reference. Good luck!

Well I just ran the full scan and it found 2 "adware" things, which I have disinfected. Hopefully that solves the problem

Did anything pop up as soon as you started the computer, before loading up Chrome? If so, it could be a fake scanner or hijacker. I've had alot of success in dealing with them, by starting the computer in Safe Mode and running System Restore, restoring to a point before the infection. Its worked on XP and Vista, with no problems at all afterwards. I haven't had to try it on Windows 7. I usually get nasty stuff like that from those video adverts on websites.

Hopefully you've sorted it, but it looks familiar to me, so the above paragraph could help you if you run into any more problems with the scanner.

No nothing before loading chrome, curiously the popup came as I was browsing some stuff about WW2

If anything more is to come of this you can be sure I'll be necroing this thread and seeking help from you : laughter:

100% Scam; does a browser even tell you when a virus hits you? I don't think so honestly.

I wasn't suspicious about the first popup, as it seems plausible that a browser might warn you that something is fishy with a page you enter. The second page though was definitely a scam though

It's been a fair few days now though since the incident and I haven't had any issues after I wiped clean those two .adware things, so all seems good and resolved
